WAHINE DELAYED BY GALE
LATE ARRIVAL AT LYTTELTON
The steamer Wahine arrived at Lyttelton yesterday morning at 8.30, about an hour and 40 minutes late. Conditions at Wellington were squally, tfith 3 strong southerly, and the vessel met the full force of a southerly gale on entering Cook Strait. The steamer continued under reduced speed. The heavy rain squall? made visibility poor until the ship approached the Lyttelton heads.
After Haikoura wqs passed better speed was made, but hot sufficient to recover lost time-
A full ship mode it necessary to pro? vide shakedowns on the starboard deck. The lafe arrival gave the staff extra wprk preparing breakfast, The only damage to the Wrhipe was the bending of the three-inch iron stanchion holding the ship’s hell on the forecastle.
The south express v»~s held up for an hour for the benefit of the North Island passengers. Those travelling on the Wahine yesterday included the Vice-Regal party and about 70 North Island Maoris who Will attend the centennial celebrations at Akarpa during the week-end.
