An Excellent Response The nominations received last evening for the Amberley Racing Club’s annual race meeting, to be held at Riccarton on May 4, were highly satisfactory, the total for the six galloping events being 109, or an average of 14. The principal event, the G. B. Starky Memorial Handicap, has attracted ' some well-performed hacks, including Capricious, King’s Toast, Cymric, Shanghai Lily, Pink Lad, Sham Boy, Lights Out, Ferriby, and Asia, who have all raced prominently in the division. The Amberley Handicap and the Glasnevin Handicap, both open events, have useful fields, and again class is in strong evidence. The entry for the Novice Stakes is exceptionally large, the number, 32, being two above the safety limit of 30 allowed for the six furlong barrier. Handicaps are due to appear next Friday, and acceptances will close on the following Monday.

TROTTING AT WELLINGTON

TODAY’S PROGRAMME The Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting will be concluded at Hutt Park to-day, when good fields will again be seen in action. Win and place betting will again be in operation. The following horses should race well in their engagements:— Randwick Handicap: Millisle, Premier, Arapai. Belmont Handicap: Jack Spratt, Cynic, .Shaun Aroon. Ferry Handicap: Star Ace, Marque, Distributor. R. A. Armstrong Memorial Handicap: Jesse Owens, Accountant, Subsidy. TURF GOSSIP

Riders at Waimate Riding engagements as follows have been made for to-day’s programme at Waimate: —P. Spratt: Grey Silk, Knight Commander, Rebel Chief, Sheeny, Prince Ruenalf. H. Powell: Cymric. C. Fox; Improvident. R. Mackie: Gusterina. C. Wilson: Midgard, Balmenter, Petersham, J. Jennings: Pink Lad, Top Row, King Gustavo. G. Ridgway: Streamline. C. Stokes: Cape Gabo. A. Messervy: Night Dress, Johnemby, Miltiades. L. J, Ellis; Asia, Valcorn. R. Register; Studley Royal (high-weight). G. Hepbu..;; Studley Royal (Cup). M. Billington: New Note H. Hibberd: Sir Hugh. . - A North Island Tour Streamline is. to make his reappearance in a flat event at Waimate today after an absence since he ran third in the Homeby Steeplechase at Riccarton in 1937. He and his stablemate, Flashlight, are booked to be taken to the North Island next week by their trainer-rider, G. Ridgway, to race at the Egmont, Wanganui, and Auckland winter meetings. Streamline is to be kept to hurdling for the early part of the trip, but should he do well in the Great Northern Hurdles on the first day at Ellerslie, he may contest the Great Northern Steeplechase on the second day. Flashlight’s efforts will be confined to' steeplechasing throughout the circuit. Both horses have got through a solid preparation, and their racing will be followed, with much southern interest. Attractive Breeding The Karamu Stud recently sold the yearling filly by Pink Coat from Pacify, but Limond from Makepeace, to Mr H. Gibson, of Eltham. Mr Gibson formerly raced Rational and Notium. Pacify was formerly owned by Mr D. Grant, and was sold by him, in foal to Pink Coat, to Mr F. Ormond. Out of Action

A few weeks ago there was a prospect of Washdyke having three good steeplechasers to represent it during the winter campaign, hut the outlook is not now so promising. Survey had to be thrown out of work when being prepared for the Great Western Steeplechase. Santoft got to Riverton, but did not reach the starting post, and Slayer is the only survivor of the trio. English Racing: The curtailed racing calendar for the season in England means that lixtures for Epsom, Ascot, Chester, Kempton, Sandown, and York will be abandoned. The stewards of the jockey club have studiously provided racing in small measure in all parts of the country, particularly at holiday time. They have placed the need for public diversion before such advantages as may be claimed for comparative centralisation. The Waimate Cup The field for the Waimate Cup, to be decided to-day, is undoubtedly the strongest attracted by 'The race for many 'ears. There were 10 acceptors, and all are expected to go to the post, including Studley Royal, who is to be given a race in the opening event, the Studholme High-weight Handicap. The list is headed by Swordstick, who has developed into one of the best of the South Island handicap performers. He was expected to win at Oamaru, but after putting up a good fight, under an apprentice rider, in the Oamaru Cup, he failed on the second day under a stronger horseman, due to not being able to handle the soft track. Similar conditions are likely to prevail to-day, and his prospects therefore do not appear very bright. Knight Commander suffered a lapje of form earlier in the year, but has been galloping well of late, and with 7-11 is capable of taking part in the finish. Night Dress also shaped badly on the changed going at Oamaru, and although the Waimate turning track will be to his liking, he will have to improve a good deal to be likely. Still he is in at a handy weight, and may easily lead throughout. Hanlon is a decided possibility with 7-3. and with an apprentice allowance will carry 7-0. He won the Tuapeka Centennial Handicap, one mile and a quarter, last month, carrying 7-9, beating Nightwings, Sir Hugh, and Vanity Queen. In his last start, he was beaten into third place by Auctor and Sir Hugh over a mile and a quarter at Beaumont. Cape Gabo won four races and was second once in his last five efforts on the West Coast Easter circuit, and this record entitles him to be one of the favourites. Lazybones ran very poorly at Oamaru and can be dismissed in the meantime. Balmenter will carry solid support. He is partial to a soft surface, arid ’.is finishing effort on the second day at Oamaru drew attention to his ability under such conditions. Studley Roval does not appeal, but Cherokee has proved himself a good middle-distance hack, and under his light impost may make matters difficult fox those above him. Vanity Queen lost any chance she had at Oamaru by being left. She is also in the Stewards’ Hack Handicap, and will probably be reserved for this, in which she should race well. Speculation is certain to taly> a wide range, and investors may show most confidence in Hanlon, Night Dress, and Balmenter.

Unpopular Procedure The New Zealand Racing Owners’, Breeders’, and Trainers’ Association has circularised clubs as follows: “While appreciating the action of 'n.e racing clubs in withholding the declaration of handicaps and closing of acceptances until after a meeting which takes place the previous week, the association feels that there are others which could, to the mutual advantage of all concerned, adopt a similar attitude. The objection raised at one time to the proposal, that the later closing of acceptances would hinder club secretaries in finalising arrangements for meetings, has been dispelled by the success of the experiment made in this respect by several clubs in the Auckland province. Where a series of race meetings follow on, the announcement of handicaps and taking of acceptances before, instead of after, each preceding fixture constitutes a hardship on owners and trainers, as circumstances may arise whereby horses become ineligible or unfit to race after, payments are made.” Death of Owner The racing world will learn with regreat of the death of Mr G. E. Trevor, of Palmerston North. He was always interested in racing, and during his career usually had a horse ,to carry his colours. Santiago and Santonio were two good winners in his colours a couple of decades ago. and just recently Colonel Bogey and Flammarion, in partnership with Mr C. P. Thorburn. have been successfully carrying on. Flammarion’s win at the last, Wellington autumn meeting in fact, with his sensational dividend for a win was in some measure responsible for Mr Trevor’s fatal illness, as the result of the ensuing excitement and nervous strain. Back in Work After a fairly long absence from the active list. Gallant Knight has been recommissioned and he will be prepared for racing early in the coming season. A good pacer over all distances when at his best, Gallant Knight has been a consistent and profitable performer during the current term. However, as is the case with most pacers tightly assessed over two miles, he may find his future opportunities somewhat restricted, although it is expected that the top flight of pacers will be better served in classes in the new season.

TROTTING NOTES

Reminders Nominations for the Oamaru Trot-, ting Club’s meeting close on Monday at 8 p.m. Acceptances for the Westland Trotting Club’s meeting are due at 9 p.m. next Tuesday. Nominations for the Oamaru Trotting Club’s winter meeting close on Monday, at 8 p.m. Wanganui Scratchings Avalon Bingen has been scratched for the Haeremai Handicap and Glen Bingen for the Rutland Handicap on the Wanganui Trotting Club’s card fox-to-day. Brackets Brackets at the Wanganui Trotting Club’s meeting to-day are:—Pioneer Handicap: Cloverdale and Village Maid; Moutoa Handicap: Radio Queen and Chaise, Grand Dame and Tommy McElwyn; Centennial Handicap: Belfast Jack and Ace High, Television and Llanvabon; Major Kemp Handicap: Chaise and Radio Queen; Aotearoa Handicap: Belfast Jack, Tinker and Ace Tigh, Television, True Trust and Llanvabon. At Hutt Park A message from Wellington last evening stated that after rain yesterday the track at Hutt Park is likely to be holding for to-day’S races, but will not be heavy. Betting at Forbury The Forbury Park Club has decided to have win-and-place betting at its winter meeting, and not single pool as previously stated. Trotting Conference ' Notices of motion to be considered at the Trotting Conference must be lodged with the secretary not later than May 24. Applications for dates of race meetings must be lodged at the same time. Attractive Filly The two-year-old filly by Rey de Oro from Erin’s Pointer, the dam of Colonel Grattan, is now in M. C. McTigue’s Methven stable. This filly was given her early education under V. Leeming’s care and she shaped up exceptionally well to be regarded as likely to prove a pacer of. more than average merit. She was recently purchased at a stiff figure and she will have every opportunity in her new quarters. Regained Form Millisle has now won in his last three starts and the manner in which he has scored on each occasion has pointed to him as being capable of maintaining his winning record. Earlier in the season he had the reputation of being a trotter of a high standard, but poor form over the Addington Easter meeting, and later at Ashburton, saw him lose favour. However, he now appears to have regained his confidence, and he should be seen to further advantage in his engagements at Hutt Park to-day. Dusky Sound’s Dam Dusky Sound, who recently took a mile and a naif grass track record of 3min 12 2-ssec. is by Happy Voyage from Hector’s Own, a mare who raced with considerable success in Southland and Otago. She was returned a good winner and a feature of her career was when she scored consecutive deadheats on the same day at Beaumont in 1927. She dead-heated with Scottish Minstrel in her first appearance and in her second start she and Spring Flower crossed the line together, the judge being unable to separate them. Good Three-year-old In running second from 48 yards behind in the Autumn Novice Handicap on the opening day of the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting. Bronze Eagle proved himself a good three-year-old and one likely to be seen to further advantage in the near future. To-day he claims an engagement from the limit of the Members’ Handicap, and although he would probably be better suited by a longer journey than a mile and a,quarter, he should again be prominent. He is a well-mannered colt, and his racing to this stage has reflected credit on his trainer, C. Tasker. Disappointing Another mediocre display was added to Regal’s growing list of unplaced performances when he failed to run up to expectations on the opening day of the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting. This pacer is proving a disappointment to his admirers. His form earlier in the season gave him bright prospects of reaching really good company. but of late he has failed to repeat his best. However, his efforts have not been attended by a great deal of luck and it is possible that he will make amends before long. He appeals as a pacer likely to do well under winter conditions. An Improved Pacer Since joining L. A. Maidens’s team, Jesse Owens has made steady improvement and he has won brilliantly in his last two starts. This pacer has always possessed speed, but it is only recently that he has been x-acing with any degree of consistency and he appears to come up a better horse for each outing. On Wednesday he won the principal handicap on the opening day of the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting, and the fact that he scored comfortably after a slow beginning suggests that his 12-yard penalty will not stop, him from giving another bold showing at Hutt Park to-day. when he will contest the R. A. Armstrong Memorial Handicap from yards behind.
