RACING AND TROTTING
TURF GOSSIP
I Riding at Gore Riding engagements for the Gore 1 meeting to-day include the following: —L. J. Clutterbuck. Peony Rose, Boai form; P. Spratt. Oityx. Viking, Norseman, Miltiades; M. Caddy, Chirp, Cherokee, Craiglea; J. Jennings, Wild I Career, Rodeur, The Joker, Night Pal, I New Note; C. Wilson, Counter Lunch; R. Mackie, Garonne. Counter Lunch | and Garonne will be the only Biccarton representatives at the meeting, and they will remain for the Winton and Dunedin meetings. In Melbourne To-day The Williamstown races to-day will be noteworthy for the meeting of Ajax and High Caste in the C. F. Orr Stakes. There is considerable speculation as to whether the Victorian champion, whose health is now reported to be good, will triumph over the former New Zealander. Acceptances for the Stakes are:—Ajax 9-5, Manrico 8-13, Adios 8-5, Maikai .8-5, High Caste 8-2, Landlaw 8-0, Reading 7-13, Amiable 7-10, Kanuiri 7-9, Magic Circle 7-8, The Albatross 7-3, French Legion 7-0. Successes- in Melbourne Saki, who is now trained in Melbourne by M. T. McGrath for his New Zealand owner, Mr J. Jameson, won the Inglehurst Handicap of £l2O, seven furlongs, at the Epsom meeting on January 24. He was a good favourite and won by half a length in Imin 25sec, which equalled the course record. At the same meeting, Mr G. J. Barton won the Two-year-old Handicap, of £IOO, with All Veil, a brown colt by Veilmond from Water Gipsy. All Veil was purchased privately as a yearling. Mr Barton, who has done well in Victoria with Silver Bond and Bursary, two of Victory Bond’s progeny, has purchased privately from Mr S. McKenzie the Man’s Pal—Victory Bond colt, which was passed in to him at 325 guineas at the Trentham sales. It is probable that the youngster will join his rela-' tives in Melbourne. Sound Breeding An interesting newcomer having his first race at Matamata last week was the two-year-old Agricola. He is by Solicitor General out of Gay Marigold, and is a first foal from his dam who was a fine performer in her day. He comes from a great ’ family for Gay Marigold is a he-f-sister to King March. Limarch and Birthday Boy, while his great grand-dam March produced Te Kara, twice a winner of the Auckland Cup. Gore’s Chief Event Although the field for the Gore Racing Club’s Handicap to-day is not particularly large, it will be a rather interesting race. It will carry a dual interest, because, with the exception of Nightwings. the rest of the field is also engaged in the Dunedin Cup. Norseman’s chance in the Wellington Cup was not fancied, because he is generally a slow beginner, and thus becomes doubly handicapped in a big field. He will have a better chance to assert himself, to-day. as the field is what might be termed a handy size, in which anything should be able to obtain a fairly clear run. Norseman’s task, it is understood, will be accentuated on paper, as from what can be gathered the rest of the field will have their handicap reduced by the apprentice allowance. Peter Pan’s Early Winners When Peter Pah retired to the stud nobody had a greater appreciation of the possibilities of the dual Melbourne Cup winner as a sire than Mr Alan Cooper, who sent a number of mares to him. Peter Pan, however, had a light season, as Mr Dangar wisely decided not to tax him unduly as soon after a hard racing. career. Ortly two yearlings by Peter Pan were sold last year in Sydney. Nevertheless, Peter Pan already has three, two-year-old winners to his credit. His first winner was Pan Pipe, who is very appropriately trained by Frank McGrath, in whose - hands Peter Pan spent the whole of his racing career. Pan Pipe who was one of the yearlings sold last Easter to Mr Hunter White for 475 I guineas, is by Peter Pan from RosaJynde, by Rossendale (son of St. Frusquin) from Beedivine, by Honey Bee (son of Tredennis) from Law Divine, by Roi Herode from Chancery, by Eager. ' Recently Mr Alan Cooper won a ] race ■at Newcastle with one of his batch of young Peter Pans, as Pretty Blue equalled the: course record when she ran away from her opponents in the Maiden Handicap. She is by Peter Pan from Glass Bowl, by Air Balloon (son of Stedfast) from Glass Countess, * by Wallace Isinglass (son of Wallace) ‘ from Countess Foote, by Sir Foote from Martineta, by Martagon. The third winner by Peter Pan was the filly Panover. who was making her first appearance on a racecourse when she ran away from a field of two-year-olds in Adelaide. Her form appears to have been unusually impressive. She was bred by her owner, the Adelaide sportsman. Mr Malcolm Rc'd. :i and is from Sequoia, a sister to Oln- j ello. who recently won a good race in India, by Heroic (son of Valais) from Desdembna, by All Black' (son of Galhnule) from Dame Lybia. by Posnano from Lady Lybia. by Anateus from Lady Trehton, dam of Lord Cardigan, by -Trenton from Black Swan, by Yattendon. £ A Doubtful Trip There is much conjecture as to how Beau V-ite will fare if he goes to Australia for the autumn racing, but it seems to be very unlikely that the three-year-old will leave New Zealand, again this season. Probably he will race at New Plymouth next month.
