Some surprise was expressed by members of the Hawke’s Bay Rivers Board recently when the chairman (Mr C. Lassen) mentioned that he had been classed as a “semi-essential user” ■ and permitted 12 gallons of petrol a month. Several members remarked that thousands of pounds were being spent on the board’s works, and it was important that the chairman should be able to supervise them and inspect any unusual • damage -that might result from flooding.
