CONDELL’S HOUSE REOPENED
CHANGE AT CHRIST’S COLLEGE
MORE ACCOMMODATION FOR DAY BOYS
A new house for day boys has been opened at Christ’s College, according to an announcement made at the beginning , of the term fay the headmaster '(Mr R. J. Richards). Air though the house in which they will be accommodated has been used since the beginning of 1935 as a waiting house for boys who could not be absorbed into -the' other day boy houses, the number of day boys has increased so much this year that it has been found necessary to provide another full house, which will be known as Condell’s. Mr T. W. C. Tothill has been appointed housemaster. Originally a boarding-house, Condell’s was first opened in May,. 1879, under the control of Mr T. D. Condell, the first old boy to join the
Christ’s College teaching staff. The house continued until 1893, .when it was closed down for boarders, being used only as a master’s residence till 1918, when itwas again commissioned, this time under the supervision of Mr E. Jenkins.
By the end ,of 1932, however, the number of boarders at the college had fallen considerably, as a result of the depression, and it _was decided to-close down Condell’s once more. An increase in the number of day boys in 1935 caused it to be requisitioned again as a waiting house, and now it has been reconditioned -and furnished with new facilities for- its future purpose; The house itself, which will be remembered by ■ many old boys, is one of the most familiar buildings in the college grounds, being situated at the south-west corner, of the quadrangle.
