STATE

“BACHELOR MOTHER”

“Bachelor Mother” now begins another week at the State Theatre, since large audiences are still going to see it, anu “Stanley and Livingstone” will follow it immediately. When a really good comedy is made in Hollywood the whole film-going world very soon hears about it; when G-'arson Kanin made “Bachelor Mother”'for RKO Radio last year the world very quickly learnt , that this young director had made his third successful film, this time a first-rate comedy. The stars are Ginger Rogers and David Niven.

The most thrilling adventure known to man comes to the screen in Darryl F. Zanuck’s production of “Stanley and Livingstone," which will be at the State next. With Spencer Tracy, twice winner of the Academy Award, starred as the heroic Stanley, Nancy Kelly and Richard Greene starred in the romantic roles, the 20th CenturyFox film features one of the greatest acting casts ever assembled. Included are Walter Brennan, also twice an award winner, Charles Coburn, Sir Cedric Hardwicke (as Livingstone), Henry Hull, and Henry Travers.

MAYFAIR

“THEY SHALL HAVE MUSIC”

“They Shall Have Music,” now showing at the Mayfair Theatre, is a film about wttich it would be impossible to enthuse too much. It has a story which grips an audience tightly and while holding the .attention firm, plays upon the emotions with its powerful drama and stirring human appeal. It has a theme that cannot fail to gain one’s sympathy, and the way in which it has been produced gives the utmost force to its meaning. There are strong personalities depicted by the actors, all of them thoroughly convincing. Joel McCrea and Andrea Leeds play the leading romantic roles, Walter Brennan is a striking character with an important part which he handles well, and Gene Reynolds, aged 15, has another leading part. But though forceful drama is a chief component part of the film, beautiful music is the making of it. Jascha Heifetz, superb violin virtuoso, is a central figure, and he plays some lavowvte violin solo and concerted works.
