ONE-THIRD OF FEES FOR GOVERNMENT
PAPARUA COUNTY COUNCIL ACCEPTS SCHEME
•‘They won’t relieve us of apy responsibility and yet they want to take a third of the receipts. If they took over the whole lot you could under-
stand it,” said Mr A. E. Langdale Hunt when the Paparua County Council received a new basis of allocation for traffic, fees from the Minister- for Transport (the Hon. R. Semple) through the Counties’ Association yesterday morning. Mr F. A. McTigue said that it appeared that the demand was made as a contribution to the v upkeep of State highways, and it would be as well to accept the terms to avoid having the total revenue taken over by the Government.
It was reported that last year dues from drivers’ licences totalled £330,
and these would be increased this year, so even the two-thirds would mean considerable revenue for .the council. “We’ve got to do it, anyway,” said a member when the council agreed to the new basis.
