DROWNED IN RIVER
TWO GIRLS FROM ORPHANAGE
FALL INTO DEEP WATER WHEN PADDLING
(PEESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) INVERCARGiLL, January 17. Two young girls were drowned in the Aparima river, Riverton, early this afternoon. They were:—
Joyce Smith, aged 16, whose parents live in Dunedin. Marjorie Corbett. aged 16£.>
A party of 12 girls from the St. Vincent Orphanage, of the Dunedin Convent of Mercy, were spending the holiday at Riverton. The girls were drowned near the bridge on the main road, at a point where the bathing pool shelves sharply. As she stepped into the deep water when paddling, Joyce Smith seized the legs of a Riverton girl, who was bathing She shook herself free and tried to hold Joyce Smith, but she disappeared. . . The clothes of Marjorie Corbett were found on the bank, and although her movements were not seen, it is thought that she went to the assistance of Joyce Smith and got into difficulties. Joyce Smith's body was found late this evening. Marjorie Corbett's was found, but cannot be recovered until the morning.
ATHLETE FRACTURES THIGH-BONE
MISHAP AT SPORTS MEETING
[From Our Own Reporter] WESTPORT, January 17. An accident to John Brown, aged 18 years, marred an athletic sports meeting to-night. When competing in the junior hop, step, and jump event Brown landed on the edge of the pit, and, twisting round as he fell, fractured the left thigh-bone. He was attended to by Dr Burns,'and removed to the Buller Hospital. Brown was a most promising allround athlete, and appeared to have a great future i" amateur athletics. His absence will considerably weaken the Buller team for the Mahar Cup contest. He was senior champion of Nelson College last year.
WOMEN SCALDED BY BOILING WATER
TIMARU, January 17. "Ivy Oddie, aged 20, was admitted to Timaru Hospital to-day suffering from scalds caused by boiling water. Jessie Hewson, an employee of the Timaru Hospital, was scalded while working in the kitchen of the institution to-day and was admitted as a patient. ~ . Alister Barker, aged seven, who lives at 7 Craighead street, was involved in an accident with a car while riding his bicycle. He suffered minor injuries. All three patients are progressing satisfactorily. ■
INJURED IN FALL DOWN SHIP'S HOLD
Concussion, injuries to the skull, and laceration of his left hand were suffered by W. Ogden, whose address was given •as London street, Lyttelton, when he fell down the hold of a vessel at the port last night. Ogden- had been helping to put on the hatches. He was attended at Lyttelton before being sent to the Christchurch Hospital, where he was reported early this morning to be still unconscious, but in a satisfactory condition.
INJURED IN FALL DOWN STAIRS
Head and back injuries were suffered by Mrs N. Tasker, of 33 Victoria street, in a fall down some stairs yesterday afternoon. She was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital, where her condition was given as satisfactory.
