WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
KAIKOURA
The monthly meeting of the Kaikoura branch of the Women's Institute was held on Tuesday afternoon in St. Paul's Hall, when the president (Mrs W. F. Perrin) presided over a moderate attendance. Two new members were welcomed. , Mrs E H. Morris gave a talk on her recent visit to Auckland, where she inspected the Institute of the Blind. Competitions were won as follows: Best collection of vegetables: Mrs A. B. Clark 1. Bouquet saucer of flowers: Mesdames E. H. Workman. and E. H. Morris (equal) ■ 1. Gardening apron: Mrs H. Storer 1. Mrs W.. H. Ramey was the winner of the picnic luncheon basket No. 1. A "camping", competition was won by Mrs Morris. ' Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames E. Sharplin, J. C. Smith, D. H. Stack, J. P. Smith, F. B. Sabiston, E. O. Smith, and R. Strahl.
SPRINGSTON SOUTH
The January meeting of the Springston South Women's Institute was held at the home of Mrs H. Hamilton. After the business session members spent a pleasant time in the garden.-Afternoon tea was served, and winners of competitions were:—Small bloom: Mrs W. Mounce 1, Mrs W. Leslie '2, Mrs G. Smithers 3. Large bloom: Mrs M. V. Ryan 1, Miss Hoskin 2, Mrs A. Powell 3 Bowl of flowers: Mrs A. Powell 1, Miss W. Wright 2, Mrs W. Mounce ,3. Sewing: Mrs W. Leslie 1, Miss W. Mounce 2, Mesdames J. Blakemore and Hopkins (equal) 3. Plum pudding: Mrs C N. Powell 1, Mrs J, Blakemore 2, Mrs Moore 3. Lawn competitions: Miss E Bailey, Mrs Moore, Mrs Hoskin,, Mrs J. Mutton, and Mrs W. Wright. Mrs Hamilton was thanked for her hospitality, and arrangements were made to hold the February meeting* in her grounds.
THE PEAKS
Mrs D. Kennedy presided at the monthly meeting of The Peaks Women's Institute.- The social hour competition, directed by Mrs Hewitt, was won by Mrs McKeegan. The monthly competitions resulted as follows:—Flowers, Mrs F. Quigley 1, Mrs Stoker 2, Mrs Inch 3; article made from flour-bag, Miss Inch 1, Mrs J. Quigley 2, Mrs Hewitt 3; vegetable salad, Mrs McKeegan 1, Mrs Inch 2, Mesdames Stokes and Inch (equal) 3..
The hostesses were Mesdames A. Hassall, Hewitt, and Inch.
