MONDAY (Before Mr E. C. Lewey. S.M.) REMANDED James Mervyn Philp was remanded until January 22 on a charge of stealing a motor-cycle, valued at £137, the property of the Heathcote County Jointly charged with stealing £IOO from Grgo Franicovitch, at Teddington, Alan Donald Park and Arthur Stephen Williamson were remanded until January 29. * THEFT David Foster was admitted to three years’ probation subject to his returning £lB 16s 9d at the rate of £1 a week, when he appeared charged with stealing a cheque to tiiat value from UrTattiiew Cadden, at Hororata. Mr D. W. Russell said defendant yielded to temptation while drunk, although he previously had a blameless record. INTOXICATED IN CHARGE , A fine of £lO, in default 30 days’ imnrisonment with hard labour, and prohibition from obtaining another driver’s licence for 18 months, were imposed on Hill Taggart for. being intoxicated in charge of a motor-cycle. Senior-Sergeant J. Bickerdike said defendant had an accident in Riccarton road on Saturday night. ~ For Taggart, Mr R. A. Young said he had a few drinks to warm him up after getting wet in the rain. On his return to Christchurch his machine skidded. CREDIT BY FRAUD A sentence of three months’ imprisonment with hard labour on the first charge, and conviction and discharge on the others, were the penalties imposed on Barry Charles Gilbert when he was charged that by incurring a debt of £7 13s for board and lodgings with George Albert Goughian, at Dunedin, incurring a debt of £2 8s with Charles Archibald Welsh, at Christchurch, and incurring a debt of £5 with Alexander Stewart, at Dunedin, he obtained credit by fraud. He was also charged with stealing a pair of shoes, valued at £1 9s 6d, the property of John Anthony Kennedy. Detective-Sergeant F. Sinclair said accused had moved about various hotels, leaving without notice. Mr R. A. Young, for the accused, said he expected financial help from his father in Australia, and was forced to move on when the money did not arrive. NAME SUPPRESSED A young man, whose name was ordered to be suppressed in the meantime, appeared on a charge of stealing sporting goods valued at £33 8s from the firm by which he was employed as salesman. It was stated that there was apparently a misunderstanding about the privileges allowed salesmen in order to advertise, their goods. The case was adjourned sine die, on the condition that any restitution be made immediately. MAINTENANCE COURT (Before Mr F. F. Reid, S.M.) A suspended sentence to two months’ imprisonment with hard labour was imposed on Claude Kelly for defaulting in the payment of £22 11s lOd arrears in maintenance payments for his wife and child, on the condition that he comply with the original order and pay 5s a week og the arrears.
