ESCAPE FROM PRISON
SENTENCE INCREASED BY A MONTH (PEISS ASSOCU.TIO* TKLXGBJLM.i AUCKLAND.. January 4. A plea of guilty and an appeal for leniency were made by Raymond Patrick Letton, aged 33, a plasterer, when charged in the Magistrate's Court with being an incorrigible rogue in that he escaped from a place of lawful confinement before the expiration of the term for -which he had been committed. ■ The police said that Letton was sentenced to 18 months' gaol in the Supreme Court last March and on the night of November 4 escaped from a cell at Rangipo prison camp, .Tokaanu, after cutting, out a -window. He_ was recaptured by a constable at Kingsland on December 14. This was the second time that Letton had escaped from custody. „, _ Letton told the Magistrate <Mr W. R. McKean) that he had tried- to join the army and make a fresh start. "It is probably just as well you didn't join the army," said the Magistrate. "However, I am taking into account what you told me On this charge you will be sentenced to one month's imprisonment, to be served at the expiry of Ihe term you are now serving." ___________—
