MORE MONEY FOR DEFENCE
WIDE POWERS SOUGHT FOR PRESIDENT
"(Received January 4, 7.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON, January 3. Mr Roosevelt asked Congress to make available immediately approximately 272,000,000 dollars for defence, supplementing the appropriations already made for the year. The Secretary of the Navy (Mr Charles Edison) asked Congress to vest in Mr Roosevelt vast peace-time powers to commandeer factories* materials, ships, and other resources. Mr Edison offered no reason. Navy Department officials said the proposal was of a precautionary nature.
