Mr David Crosble, of the head office staff of Messrs J. B. Westray and Company (N.Z.), Ltd., insurance brokers, "Wellington, has been appointed manager of the company's Christchurch branch. Mr James K. Martin, B.Sc, Valley road, has received an appointment as assistant engineer to the City Engineer at Dunedin, and has begun duty there. Mr J. O'Brien, M.P., was a passenger from Wellington by the steamer express yesterday morning. Members of the executive of the Christchurch Welcome Club met yesterday morning to bid farewell to one of the members, Mr F. E. S. Long, general secretary of the Y.M.C.A., who is leaving with the Ist Echelon Of the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force. The DeputyMayor, Mr J. S. Barnett, gave Mr Long a foun-tain-pen, and referred to his popularity. Mr Long, replying, promised to* keep the club's organiser, Mrs W. F. Kent-Johnston, informed of his activities overseas. Mr Long specially mentioned the excellent work that is being done by the Welcome Club, and said that it was much appreciated by the soldiers. Mr E. H. Buckeridge, a member of the club's executive, and president of the Christchurch Businessmen's Club, also spoke. Mr P. H. Harris, Christchurch manager of the South' British Insurance Cdmpany, Ltd., for 20 years, was entertained by the staff and presented, with tokens of their goodwill on his retirement from the company after 43 years' service. Mr M. G. Somerville, in making the presentation, referred to the cordial relations that existed between the staff and Mr Harris, and wished him many years of happy retirement. At the same time, opportunity was taken to welcome Mr N. C. Barstow, of Auckland, who succeeds Mr Harris. Professor D. B. Copland will soon resign his post of Commonwealth Prices Commissioner to become a Commissioner of the State Savings Bank of Victoria (stated a Melbourne message to the "Sydney Morning Herald" recently). The term of his appointment, which was announced by the Premier of Victoria, is seven years. The appointment carries with it a salary of £soos a year. Professor Copland's duties as a commissioner will not interfere with his work at the University of Melbourne, which he will resume at the beginning of the next academic year in March. Professor Copland, who is already a member of the Victorian State Economic Committee, appointed several years ago to advise the Government on economic and financial matters, declined to say whether his appointment to the Victorian Savings Bank Board would result in his withdrawing from the position of Federal Prices Commissioner.
