FAT SHEEP AND FAT LAMBS IMPROVE
In view of the fact that there had been no market at Addington for more than a fortnight entries were exceptionally small when the weekly sales were resumed yesterday. The attendance of farmers was also much smaller, and this had an effect on the competition for store stock. An entry of little more than skeleton size for this time of year was penned in the fat lamb section, and the sale was a shade better than the preChristinas one. Fat sheep were in small numbers even for a weekly sale, and there was an improvement in values for butchers' sheep. Store sheep met with a brisk demand for the small penning, comprising mostly rape lambs. Fat "cattle eased by an average of 15s a head notwithstanding that the entry was small. There was an improving tendency in the demand for fat pigs and vealers, but other subsidiary sections were a shade weaker.
STORE SHEEP The store sheep yarding was on the small side, totalling about 1300 head. There was a small . attendance, but this did not-prevent the sale from being keen | throughout. The offering comprised mainly ■-, lambs, and these; with improved prospects brought on by the rain, met_ with good competition. One two-truck lot went at 17s, with another big line at 16s 3d. Medium sorts sold between. 13s 2d and 14s sd, with-cull'lambs to lis. There was little, else in the yarding, a pen of 94-.old woolly ewes and lambs making 10s Id, all counted. Medium .twotooth wethers made 14s 6d, and a small pen of young ewes went at 17s. FAT LAMBS The lamb entry totalled only 600 head, compared with 3000 head at the double market a fortnight ago. For the small supply the demand was very keen. The export companies were in the maTket tor some extent, paying full schedule rates to a fraction more. The local trade paid a good BJd per lb for light and mediumweight prime quality. The sale altogether was a keen one, the short yarding resulting in standard rates being slightly exceeded. . , „ ■ ■ Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., sold:-*-pn account of Cheviot client. 13 at 24s 7d; JJ Minson (Halsjjfell). 71 at 20s lpd to 24s Id; J. FAT SHEEP For a post holiday market the. entry was one of the smallest on record, comprising approximately 3000 head. However, it was sufficient for -requirements. The hot weather and absence on holiday of many local people affected the New Year demand to the extent that butchers reduced their buying. Practically all the sheep came from within the northern and mid parts/ of the province The market opened briskly at the best of last week's rates, and as the sale proceeded good wethers and good ewes showed a definite improvement. These were/better by Is to Is 6d a head on the rates ot a fortnight ago. Light. wethers showed little change, but there wasisdroe buying on export account of light ewes at up to 13s a head, this slightlyiirming the sale for medium ewes. There was a good clearance, and the sale concluded firmly. A truck of 74 .wethers from F. Tavener (Orari) averaged 31s fid. and the tops of a line of ewes from J. F. Scott (Opawa) made 32s lOd. FAT CATTLE The fat cattle penning comprised 432 head, a comparatively small number following a fortnight's holiday. However, it sufficed requirements and a little more. Included were several well-finished drafts of prime medium-weight cattle. The market opened at about last week's rates, but as the sale proceeded the demand weakened. On an average heavy steers were down by close on 20s a head, and medium and mediocre cows by a good 15s a head. Medium-weight prime steers and heifers showed a smaller recession, approximating up to 10s a head, there being some instances in the earlier part of the sale where values were fully on a' par for tnis class with the rates of a week ago. VEALERS
The entry in the vealer section small, comprising 150 head last week. There was a better demand for all classes. A fair percentage of suckers was included,' and for the better sorts of these there was a distinctly improved demand. Generally, however, there was an improved" sale for all classes. Values were as follows: ■*. Best runners, to £7 3s 6d. ' Medium to good runners, £3 8s to £4 10s. Extra good vealers, £3 12s 6d to £4 15s 6d. Good vealers, £2 to £3 18s, Large calves, 30s to £2 ss. Small calves, 9s to 30s.
STORE CATTLE
. The store cattle entry consisted almost solely of odd pens of cows of average store standard, there being no well-bred young lines of young cattle entered. The only section in brisk demand comprised potting bulls. For these good prices were realised, ranging from £6 to £l3.
DAIRY CATTLE
, There was an entry of about 70 head. Thev were a mixed lot, with a few quality sorts. The latter sold freely, making in a few cases up to £l2 a head and more. There was little change in the values of other grades, although the tone was a shade better. There was a larger attendance, and the prospects are that.the demand may improve from now on, as .ja good deal of replacement will, be necessary of cows that have finished their lactation period.
FAT PIGS
There was a small entry of porkers at the commencement of the sale, and as a result values rose by 3s to 4s a head on the double market rates. Late arrivals, however, brought the entry up to normal size, and values slipped back to Uttle better than export parity. Choppers were in small supply, and met with a keen sale. Baconers were forward in Very Small numbers, and the sale was a good one, all classes, being a shade better than at last sale. Values were:— Choppers, £3 Is 6d to £6 Is. . As a result values slumped on the high rates of a fortnight ago. 'The only class to sell at approximately recent values were extra good slips and good stores. Values were:— Weaners, small 10s to 12s, medium 13s to 15s, good -to 18s 6d. Slips. 18s to 245. y Small stores. 25s_to 295. Large stores, to 35s 6d. ! BURNSIDE (PBBSS ASSOCHTIOH TELEOBAM.)
