v.- ■.' -. . ■'.' i.l NOTES ON THE RACING

[THE PRESS Special Service] INVERCARGILL, January 3. Well-deserved Win. Doubleack was sent out a good favourite ; tor the "Sotithland Handicap, but he had,: no chance with Mona's Song, who came right away to beat him by a length and a haU.- Merry March and Peony Rose madeThost of the running, and with five furlongs to go Swordstlck moved into third place, ahead of Sailing Lady Wild Career, Mona's . Song, ' and BOSWeII. DouWeack was still right at the rear of the field at the half-mile, but he made up ground turning into the straight, in .the run home Mona's Song was clear at the distance, and- Doubleack was the only ' one to" challenge. .The last-named naa little chance with the leader; and Monas Song stayed on to win decisively. Boswell'got to within a neck of Doubleack, with Swordstick two lengths away fourth.. Next' to finish were Sailing Lady, Queen of Song, and Wild Career. Mona's Songs win was well deserved, as she Jias been three times placed in leading handicaps this season. This was her first win over a mife: and a quarter. Doubleack had a lot of ground to make up. While Queen of Song-did not get a good run, Sailing Lady had every chance. A. Dead-heat There was a great finish in the Shorts : Handicap, when the judge declared a i dead-heat between Spendthrift and Bay Duke, the two favourites. The field raced in line for almost half a furlong before Bay Duke showed out from Flagman, Nigger Boy, and Rodeur. Bay Duke took S&SSSe at the half-mile, but racing to the raßJht Spendthrift ran into second place, •3 Mjpagman, Nigger Boy, and phala "s hsfis>>- Spendthrift was on terms with Bay Duke at the-distance, and in a great . finish'•jjeiween. the pair the judge was unable to separate them at the post. Flagman was two. and a half lengths away third, and Nigger Boy. two • lengths further back, fourth. Phalanx and Rodeur were next to finish. Spendthrift appeared to have .the measure of Bay Duke a few yards- from the post, but the latter finished on again to be in line with him on the post. An Easy Win :, Chirp was backed down to a short price in the Final Handicap, but she had no chancer with Sparkle,' who ran home the - easiest winner of the meeting. . Sparkle took charge within ; the first furlong, .and , along the back he was closely attended ■:•. by Spanish Lad; Boaforrh;; Amelita, and Chirp, who made-up -ground .racing.; to .the straight. 'Sparkle: came right awayfrom the others in the sfaaighVandwdri °y an easy five lengths. Chirp beat Boa-, form by half ■'£ length for ■ secondj with - Spanish, Lad closeup fourth. with the leader all the way he t<jok charge running to the straight, and was not afterwards in danger of defeat. He was attended by Royal Style, Merry Simon, Vanity Queen, and Triple Cone at the straight entrance, but he always had their measure in the run home. Vanity Queen' was finishing on in second place, and Merry Simon was a useful third. Black Bard was fourth. Impressive Win Hearth was confidently backed in the Rosedale Handicap, and he justified it by winning impressively, ' Pink Bond tried to win all the way, and she was first into the straight, but King's Chorus headed her at the distance. Hearth and then Ortyx came through, and Hearth won with something in hand. from Ortyx by a length.. King's Chorus was a neck away third, and Asia close up. fourth. King's Chorus was unlucky, as he struck trouble three furlongs from home.

for the permit, but it is more than likely that the meeting will be held at Addirigtoh. Death of Nervie's Last There was an unfortunate termination to the Auckland Trotting Club's summer meeting, when, during the running of the last race, the Premier Handicap, Nervie's ;Xast, who, bracketed with Parauri, was each-way favourite, came to grief, breaking a leg, which necessitated his destruction. Nervie's Last, a free-legged Australian.bred pacer, owned by Messrs E. G. and F. A. Bridgens, and trained by F. J. §mith, has been a favourite with the ,Epsom public ever since he ran second at the Auckland summer meeting in 1935, which .was his first appearance in New Zealand. • He quickly reached the winners' list, and in his first season registered two firsts, three seconds, and a third for six starts. The follow-. ing season he scored five wins and six places for £IOBS. 'He was showing consistent formf this term, having recorded four seconds, two being at the recent meeting.
