ADDRESS BY MR SAVAGE

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir.—ln the seasonal message of Mr Savage + to the people of New Zealand appears this significant phrase: “The majority are able for -the fourth time in succession to enjoy a merry Christmas.” That envisages . the whole trouble with. the Socialistic regime, which has unblushingly used us powers dictatorially and entirely ; m .the supposed interests of. one class, and one class only. And this is termed by it, democracy, whereas democracy should surely mean a system whereby the interests of all sections of a community are equitably dealt with. The system of pampering one class is steadily leading the beneficiaries to regard work as a distinct interference with the pursuit of pleasure and, that being so, it naturally follows that there is loss .of incentive, : which automatically spells lessened production. Such a one-sided political attitude cannot possibly endure, and a day of reckoning must assuredly come. For a country to progress there must be scope for the fullest display by its. people of initiative and resultant reward. In the absence of such a condition it naturally follows that emigration of all those fired ,with such a resolve takes place. As an instance, look at the large number of our young men who happened to be in England when war broke out and immediately formed themselves info a company to help in war ♦ffprt. Presumably, they belong to-' the class I allude to, which left our: shores owing to there being .no Incentive held out for. advancement in the land of their birth'. The position is' sad to contemplate, but the people ■ here are to blame for, placing the Socialists in power.—Yours, etc., NEW ZEALANDER. January 2, 1940,
