TAKAMATUA BEACH HORSE SPORTS
VISITORS TO AKAROA ATTEND SCARPA FLOW WINS OINAKO CUP Fine weather and a good tide made the annual horse sports on Takamatua Beach a successful holiday attraction on Saturday. The main event, the Oinako Cup, was won by V. L. Brocherie’s Scarpa Flow. Mr E. X. Le Lievre, patron of the sports, presented the handsome cup, which he had given, and congratulated the winner on his success in centennial year. The president, Mr B, W. Henning, thanked Mr Le Lievre for his continued support to the sports. The competitions for men and women were well patronised. Results are as follows: — Trotting Events Novices’ Handicap—Scarpa Flow (V. L. Brocherie), scr, 1; Bonny Boy (E. W. Haley), scr, 2; Sparkles (Mrs S. Harrington), 80yds bhd, 3. Flashlight (F. A. Hammond), Wairangi (J. H. Le Lievre), Billabong (T. Barwick), Waitohi (Mrs J. Daniels), and Scramble (J. Daniels) also started. Chandi Chowk (L. Le Lievre) was scratched. , , . _ . ' All went off to a very good start. Bonny Boy took the lead for half a round, when Scarpa Flow went to the front and held the lead for the »est of the race. The second and third places changed between Bonny Boy and Wairangi until the last round, when Bonny Boy went ahead. Sparkles made up ground and beat Wairangi for third place. Scarpa Flow won by 40 yards,: and there was about the same distance betwe.en second and third. Oinako Cup—Scarpa Flow _(V. L,. Brocherie). 30yds bhd, 1; Huon Main (R. W. Armstrong), 20yds bhd, 2; Haeremai (J. T. Robinson). 70yds bhd. 3. Bonny Boy. Billabong, Wairangi, Mickey Bingen (W. McKay), Little Travis (T. Le Lievre), Master Tommy (S. Harrington), and Donalda (J. Ferguson) 3130“ started. Shandi Chowk, Scramble, and No Harvest (A. F. Shadbolt) were scratched. Little Travis lost 40 yards In the start, and Huon Main led Haeremai and Donalda in the first round. In the second round Scarpa Flow came through the field strongly and took up the lead from Huon Main, Donalda, and Haeremai. In the final round, Scarpa Flow was strongly challength by Huon Main in the straight, but just got home by inches. Haeremai also beat Dopalda for third place, and there were only a few yards separating the first four horses. The rest of the horses in the race were well back. Takamatua Trot—Little Travis (T. Le Lievre), 70yds bhd, 1; Daybreak (Mrs L. Harrington), 30yds bhd. 2; Peter Hope (F, A. Hammond), 60yds bhd, 3. Billabong, Huon Main. Mickey Bingen, and Haeremai also started. Chandi Chotok, Scarpa Flow, No Harvest, Master Tommy, and Donalda were scratched. „ . , Daybreak led the field in the first round followed by Peter Hope, Little Travis, and Huon Main. In the second round : the position of the horses was unchanged, but Daybreak had Increased his lead by 20 yards. In the final round Little Travis caught Daybreak in the straight after a good effort and won comfortably. Consolation Trot—Master Tommy (S. Harrington), 110 yds bhd, 1; Donalda (J. Ferguson). 120 yds bhd. 2; Scramble (J. Daniels), 20yds bhd, 3. Sparkles and Wairangi also started. , Wairangi led the field at the start of the race, but broke, and Scramble came through followed by Master Tommy and Donalda. The leading horses held the same positions at the completion of the second round. In the final round. Master Tommy went up to beat Donalda to the post by 20 yards. Scramble finished third 100 yards back. .... Ladies’ Walk and Trot—Peter Hope (Mrs F. Hammond) 1, Bonny Boy (Mrs E. Glynan) 2, Omaha (Miss Grogan) 3. Wairangi (Mrs J. H. Le Lievre).
