CANTERBURY PARK T.C.

NEW YEAR MEETING FIRST DAY’S PROSPECTS Light harness interests during the New Year holidays will be centred in the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting to be held at Addington on Monday and Tuesday. A fine programme will be presented. The fields generally are well together, and close running races may be expected throughout the clay. King’s Plry, because of his brilliant win at Ashburton, has taken a 12 yards penalty that has placed him 60 yards behind the limit horses in the Canterbury Handicap, but the rest Of the meld provides oven 12 yards breaks. King’s Play at his best is a really great horse, and his 60 yards handicap will only serve to fill the race with interest. Blair Athol. Fine Art, Pot Luck, Cantata, ahd Plutus are all New Zealand Cup horses, while Southern Chief, with several brilliant performances to his credit, is coming into the limelight as a prospective New Zealand Cup winner. The 10 starters represent as good a field as has been assembled for a long time. With fine weather, the clay track Should be in almost perfect order, and it will not be a surprise if fresh records are established. The first race will commence at noon, and the win and place system of betting will be in operation. The programme is as follows: (Noon— INTRODUCTORY HANDICAP, of £2OO. unhoppled trotters. Smln 39sec class. !■ One mite and a half. Elonfleld .. Scf Reta'S Own .. scr < Bon Haven .. scr BUsh Laddie 12 ! »Gaynor .. sdr Great Mountain 24 i'Lady Ede ..scr Anna’s .Voyage 36 1 Premier .. scr Judgement .. 36 Princess Sphinx ~ 48 Beverley scr Escalado .. 60 ' The Introductory Handicap may ;t;raat§ a surprise, but on anything that (has been done in public the chances of ;Eeta’s Own and Bush Laddie must make a direct appeal. Beta’s Own at the Timam meeting gave a steady display of good solid trotting, and once on the journey did not look like being beaten. The mile and a half of Reta's Own in 3min SlseC, was the performance of a good one, and the experience to her would be of value. 'Bush Laddie is a stable companion [of Sea Gilt, and his trainer, E. J. /Smith, has a full knowledge of this geldirtg'S class. He is one of the best trotters of his age ever raced in New Zealand, but in Beta's Own tie meets an older mare. Blonfleia is one from the strong C. S. Donald stable, and while Lady Ede haS speed' She is unreliable. Princes? Beverley may need more racing, and possibly the most danger to Reta’s Own may come from a quick beginner in Judgment. The finish may be fought by Reta’s Own, Bush Laddie, and Judgment, 12.40 p.m.— RAILWAY HANDICAP (in saddle), of £3OO. 2mlh issee class. One mile. Aircraft .. scr Birig Crosby 12 Aqua Bond .. scr Cruiser .. 12 Belie Grattan ser Donor .. 12 Mankind .. ser Nell Grattan 12 Sports Review scr Recess .. 12 Canterbury Bark has always catered for saddle horses, and all will remember the two miles , saddle races that produced the true test of stamina. The Railway Handicap is run over a mile, and Ddnor, by his display at New Brighton, has proved himself a weight carrier. With R. Donald again in the saddle, Donor appears a very likely winner. Bing Crosby will also be handled by a master horseman in Mauriee Holmes, and the American pacer may be quite capable of beating the 2mifl 8 i-ssec, recorded by Donor. Nell Grattan, Belle Brattan, and Aqua Bond represent a strong bracket, but the places may be filled by Donor, Bing Crosby, and Aqua Bond, 3.25 p.m.— LYTTELTON HANDICAP, of £2OO. 3min 34sec class. One mile and a half. Black AVt .. Set Refund .. 12 i Club King .. ser Royal surprise 12 1 Huguenot .. scr Sentiment .. 12 ! Labour Day .. scr Super Jack... 12 'Reception (T.) scr Three Tens .. 12 ; Shadow Queen scr Old Faithful 24 Siege Gun .. scr Waitemata >• 24 i Wainoni • Glri scr Lady Slipper 36 Charles Russell 12 purveyor .. 36 1 Ned Worthy .. 12 ■ Ned Worthy Was well beaten at Ashfcurtoft, but track conditions were ■against him, and it will be a good jfcorse that will beat him in the Lyttelkton Handicap. At the Timaru meetpng he Was unluckily beaten, but he ps a pacer above the average. Club King, from M. S. Edwards’s stable is ■another fine pacer, and Black Art, (Labour Day. Siege GUn, Wainoni Girl, and Three Tens ate all of proved class. (Wainoni Girl is now better placed than in some of her recent races, but (form points to Ned Worthy, Club King, and Three Tens.

2.10 p.m.— CANTERBURY HANDICAP, of £IOOO. 4rnin 2?sec class. Two miles. Colonel Grattan scr Cantata .. 24 Donald Dhu .. scr Pot Luck .. 24 Renown's Best scr - Fine Art .. 36 Southern Chief sCf Blair Athol .. 48 Plutus .. 12 King’s Piay .. 60 One of the best fields of pacers set to meet at Addington for some yeai'S will parade in the Canterbury Handicap, of two miles, 4min 27sec class. It is practically a New Zealand CUp field, although great pacers in Lucky Jack and Parislenne are missing* King’s Play, by reason of a 12 yards penalty, has been set the task of a champion, but he may measure up to all requirements. Fine Art’s display at Ashburton was according to the support given him on the totalisator, but -with a good clay track he is expected to do much better;. Pot Luck is in great fettle, blit possibly the best may be Cantata, who, at Ashburton. ran a great race only to tangle in the last 50 yards. Coupled with Blair Athol and Donald Dhu, Cantata completes a very strong bracket held by R. J. Humphreys. Cantata may prove the best of the trio. R. B. Berry’s hope is Southern Chief, a great pacer who. at times, has his own ideas on racing.' In this race he has only to go away correctly to be in the money at the finish. He has rapidly graduated from the moderate to the good class races. Colonel Grattan is reported to be in great form, and Plutus and Renown’s Best are capable. Speculators will probably pin their faith to Cantata, Fine Art, and Southern Chief. 3.50 p.m.— STEWARDS* HANDICAP, of £3OO. Unhoppled trotters. 4mln 39sec class. Two miles. Dark Hazard .. scr Aristotle .. 36 Ganton .. scr Blue Logan .. 38 Mohican .. scr Pilot Peter .. 36 Franz Derby .. 12 Mute .. 48 Tan John .. 12 Royal Romance 48 Ggyfalcon 24 captain Bolt 60 Timworthy .. 24 Tan John was all at sea in the going at Ashburton, but he is not likely to strike the same conditions at Addington. He is a possible winner of the Stewards’ Handicap, and Dark Hazard, without one good performance as a trotter to his credit, may dispute favouritism. Gerfalcon is in form, and Mute and Royal Romance arc trotters of exceptional merit. The finish may be fought by Tan John, Gerfalcon, and Royal Romance, 3.30 p.m.— ISLINGTON HANDICAP, of £250. 3min 26sec class. One mile and a half. Harlequin .. scr Subsidy .. 12 Sports Review scr Fremont .. 24 Worthy Need scr Wee Pots .. 24 Harold Guy .. 12 Aide de Camp 36 Red PigeOh .. 12 Nell Grattan 36 Roan Duke .. 12 A limit of 36 yards in the Islington Handicap, and 11 good class pacers should provide one of the high lights of the day. Red Pigeon has been consistency itself, and must again be given a great chande, \Vee Potts was hot favoured with the best of luck at Timaru, but she is a fine pacer and due for a win at any time. She is a possible winner of the Islington Handicap, and next in popular favour may be Bed Pigeon and Fremont. 4.10 p.m.— TEMPLETON HANDICAP, of £225. 3mln 2956 c class, one mile and a half. ■ Black surprise SCr Replica .. scr Colonel Agility ..13 AxwOrthy sCr Aldershot .. 12 Gay Lady .. eer Loyal Avis .. 12 Goldeh Mist scr Regal .. 12 Passport .. scr Jovial .. 24 Aldershot is handicapped bn_ 3min 28sec in the Templeton Handicap, but this is by no means the limit of his powers. He should not be seriously troubled to win this race and following him home may be Colonel and Regal. 4.SS p.m.— AU REVOIR HANDICAP, of £275. 2mln 47sec class. One mile and a quarter. Fremont .. sCr Jaekaranda 12 Llewellyn’s Lightning Lady 12 pride scr Rey spec .. 12 Red Ranger .. scr Frisco Boy .. 24 Walpahi .. SCr Navy Blue .. 24 George Rey .. 12 Great Jewel 36 Fremont, who claims an engagement in the Islington Handicap, will probably be reserved for the Au Revoir Handicap, of a mile and a quarter, in which he Will meet an exceptionally smart pacer in Lightning Lady who, at Timaru, put up a fine performance to / win the Pareora Handicap. In this race hdr final run bordered on the sensational, and stamped her as a great race mare. Lightning Lady appears to hold the best prospects in the Au Revoir Handicap, and next best fancied may be. Jaekaranda and Waipahi.
