Matches in the North Canterbury Cricket Association’s competitions were continued on Saturday. Details were:— SENIOR GRADE Kalapoi A v. Woodend A In the match, Kaiapol A v. Woodend A, Kaiapoi, batting first with three players short, scored 206 runs (H. Carter 52, F. T. Capstick 47, C. Martin 30, L. Stead 24. A. Hopkins 22, H. Trustrum 16). Bowling for Woodend, M. Ballinger took three wickets for 21 runs. At stumps Woodend had scored 63 runs for the loss of three wickets (R. Little 33 not out). Rangiora A v. Kaiapol B Playing at Kalapoi. on Saturday afternoon, Kaiapoi, battfhg first, was all out for 67 runs (F. Eder 13, C, Isherwood 11, N. Eves 10). Bowling for Rangiora, R. Taplih took eight wickets for 43 runs and P. Roberts two for 16. At the close of play Rangiora had scored 222 runs for the loss oi eight wickets (B. Bennett 55, L. Giles, 4T R. Taplin 26 not out, P. Roberts 23 not out, R. Priddle 20, N. Newton 12). Bowling for Kaiapol. J. Anderson tpok three wickets for 65 runs and E. Griffin two for 21.

MATCH AT CHEVIOT

In a friendly cricket match played against the Cheviot Cricket Club, a team from the Farmers’ Union won by 168 runs to 117.

For the Farmers’ Union J. Crossen made 51, J. Fleming 35, and D. Abbott 18, and for the Cricket Club, R. Hadley 28, E. Hutchison 15, and R. Lundy 12 were the best scorers. .

SOUTHBRIDGE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

Twelve new members were elected at a meeting of the Southbridge Horticultural Society, at which the schedule for the autumn show was revised and stewards were appointed. .As a memorial to Mr A. J. Inwood, a most enthusiastic official and member for many years, it was decided to procure a cup for the cut bloom section to be known as the Inwood Cup, and also to provide trophies for most points in the intermediate and junior sections.

AGRICULTURAL CLUB

ELLESMERE KITCHEN GARDENS JUDGED

Judging of the kitchen gardens entered in the competition of -the Ellesmere Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural' Club has been completed by the Rev. Father Taylor, who was greatly impressed by the quality and variety of the garden displays. The awards were:—Champion garden: Bernard Christey 1, Oscar Henderson 2; records, Alan McGregor 1, Robert McGill and Letitia Heslop equal 2; garden and record, senior, Robert McGill 1, Albert Carter 2; junior garden, Rewi Brown 1, Alex. Brown 2, Hazel Rickerby 3; best girls’ garden, Dorothy Kendall 1, Margaret Chambers, 2. Alan McGregor will be recommended for an award of the Canterbury Horticultural Society for gardening under difficult conditions.

PROVINCIAL PATRIOTIC FUND

ELLESMERE COMMITTEE’S WORK

A start with organising work in the interests of the provincial patriotic fund was made at a meeting of the Ellesmere committee, which comprises members of the Ellesmere County Council and the Leeston and -Southbridge Town Boards. Mr R. T. McMillan, who is the delegate for the district on the provincial committee, was elected chairman, and Mr T. Moorhouse secretary and treasurer. A letter from the Provincial Council stated that funds were urgently needed for the entertainment of soldiers at Christmas and the supplying of comforts. Arrangements were made to proceed with the collection of funds.

LEESTON TOWN BOARD

Approval was given by the Leeston Town Board at its monthly meeting to a proposal that a controlling committee for the Ellesmere County should be set up lor the collecting of patriotic funds, and Commissioners J. H. and H. D. Jones were appointed the board’s representatives on the committee.

"While the main industry in New # Zealand continues to be public works, we are not likely to see any increase in fan*i production,” commented Cmr. W. Johnston, after the chairman (Cmr. B. Brown) had given a report on the recent conference held in Christchurch to consider the question of man power, and farm. production.

When Cmr. A. S. Lyons asked if any further progress had been made about the proposed building pf State bouses in Leeston, the clerk stated that officials had lately surveyed the sections purchased some time ago by the Housing Department.,

MAGISTRATE’S COURT AT AMBERLEY

A meeting of the Magistrate’s Court was held at Amberley, before Mr H. A. Young, S.M.

In the case C. D. Petrie v. S. Grainger, claim for £4 16s sd, judgment was given for plaintiff by default with costs.

On judgment summonses, Wintringham and Company, LtS., v. F. R. Coe, £8 19s 6d, defendant was ordered to pay the amount forthwith, in default 10 days’ imprisonment. 'Texas Company, Ltd., v. F. R. Coe. £l7 12s sd, defendant was ordered to pay the amount forthwith, in default 19 days’ imprisonment. For having no warrant of fitness, T. F. Bromley was fined 10s and ordered to pay costs, and for driving a motortruck without a lighted tail-light, he was fined a like amount.

A. Allen, for failing to give way to traffic on the right, was fined £2 and ordered to pay costs. Alan Charles Vette, for being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car, was fined £lO and ordered to pay costs. He was prohibited from obtaining a driver’s licence for three years. On a charge of driving without a licence, he was convicted and discharged. He was represented by Mr E. D. R. Smith.

FAREWELL TO TEACHER

On severing her connexion with the Southbridge School, where she has been a teacher in the secondary department, Misa D. M. Brown was entertained by the pupils, on whose behalf Nola Hickman presented her v ith a crystal water set. The headmaster, Mr W. C. Eggelton, spoke of Miss Brown’s ability as a teacher and her devotion to duty.

FAIR AT SOUTHBRIDGE

Many stalls, well laden with goods, were . a feature of a Christmas fair held by the Southbridge Presbyterian Church. • which was most successful. The opening was performed by tbe Rev. L. G. B. Whitehead and competitions were . won by Mr 3D. G. Wylie arid Mrs A. J. Beamsiey.

AT IRWELL

At a public meeting held at Irwell the following were elected a committee to arrange for send-of¥ s socials to soldiers leaving on active service: Messrs John Brooks (chairman-), H. Weave, H. J. Page, R. T. McMillan. A. J. W. Young, L. B. Coe, T. A. Stephens, H- Kendall, N. Heslop, W. Doak, J. Coe, W. S. McLaughlin, E. E. Rowley, A. Pearce, and A. Rowley (secretary).

The acting-County Clerk (Mr W. S, K. Drew) is spending his annual holidays in the North .Island.

Mr J. G. Weastell, Glen tunnel, is visiting his son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs P. Leeves, Auckland. Miss .P. Weastell, Glentunnel, is spending the school vacation with her sister, Mrs P. Leeves, Auckland. 4 Mr J. Turner, who has been on the staff of the Coalgate Railway Station, has been transferred to Hundalee, where he has started duty. Miss Janet Harrison, Hokitika, is spending the school holidays with Miss S. Harrison, Glentunnel. Mr Keith Harrison, Hokitika, is visiting his uncle, Mr J. Harrison, Glentunnel.

Miss Shirley Marsh, Glentunnel, J is spending a few days with Miss Berta Templeton, Ladbrooks. Miss S. Titheridge, Glentunnel, is visiting Christchurch during the school vacation. /

LAWN TENNIS

WAIKARI BEATS AMBERLEY

At a match recently played on the Waikari Tennis Club’s courts between teams from the Amberley Tennis Club and the Waikarl Club, Waikari won by 18 sets to 6. •

FAREWELL PRESENTATION

AT SPRINGFIELD

Mr J. O’Donnell* who has been inspector of permanent ways for the last two years, has left on transfer to Greymouth. Before his departure he and Mrs O’Donnell were entertained at the home of Mr and Mrs F. H. McKeown, the evening being spent in cards and games. Mrs McKeown presented the guests with a green flower bowl, a pack of cards, and a of stationery, Mr O’Donnell was met by members of the railway staff and presented with a sum of money by Mr McKeown, stationmaster. Other speakers were Mr D. McCallum, Mr R. Hyland, and Mr Maindonald and Mr -Flynn.

SOUTH MALVERN RED CROSS

A meeting of the South Malvern Red Cross Society was held with Mrs John Deans presiding. Some of the members volunteered to take sewing. A small sub-committee was set up to deal with any immediate business.
