TERRIBLE GAS EXPLOSION
MORE THAN 1000 KILLED CtTXITED PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT.) (Received December 15, 7.10 p.m.) BUCHAREST, December 14. An explosion in chlorine gas tanks at a cellulose factory in the small village of Zarnesti, in Transylvania, caused appalling loss of life. It is reported that the whole factory staff of 1000 perished, either by poison gas, which spread for many miles, or in the subsequent fire which consumed the whole village of Zarnesti. Hundreds more were killed by gas in the surrounding district. Excess pressure in the pipes caused the explosion. Fumes spread rapidly among the workers, and then two containers blew up. Whole families in a house a mile from the factory were killed by gas while they were asleep. The fireman of a passenger train standing at a station 250 yards away was killed. The passengers fled, but the station staff remained, and all were killed by gas. Hundreds fleeing into the forests died in their tracks.
