CHRISTCHURCH WEST HIGH SCHOOL

RECORD ROLL NUMBER A NEW BUILDING WANTED A new building to contain a library and other rooms, and an assembly hall, were ’ two urgent requirements at the school, said the headmaster, Mr A. E. Caddick, at the prize-giving of the Christchurch West High School, held in the Canterbury College Hall yesterday afternoon. The school opened on February 6, 1939, with a total roll of 335 —the highest since its establishment in 1936, said Mr Caddick. That had entitled the school to an-addi-tional teacher. After detailing reorganisation and the need for accommodation for the' library;, a special science laboratory, a robm for art and craft classes, and a geography robm, Mr Caddick mentioned-.'that an assembly hall was important. He would have to appeal to the parents, former pupils, and-present pupils, to. raise funds for-, its establishment, he said. The Parents’ Association had already made a start by setting arid© this year , a sum as the basis of an 'assembly ball fund. Money raised for the purpose would be subsidised by the Government.' Early Leaving A^e There were still too many pupils Jeav-. ing school at an early, age, said Mr Caddick. It was a matter, that called for seri-

ous consideration. The school leaving age. it seemed, should be raised immediately to 15 years. ' Mr A. E. Flower, chairman of the Canterbury XJniyersity College Council, said that the school had great traditions. The council had been very mindful of the school and was doing its best to secure the extra, facilities required.
