THE TECHNICAL COLLEGE

ROLL NUMBER OF 4125STUDENTS MORE ACCOMMODATION NEEDED At both schools under. the jurisdiction of the Christchurch Technical College Board of Governors there is a record roll number of 4125 students, all told, and there is an urgent necessity for accommodation, according to the chairman of the board, Mr T. W. West, who addressed pupils and parents at the annual prize-giving in trie Civic Theatre last night. Everybody regretted that the nation was at war, but that was an added reason why the best possible facilities should be provided for the training of the young to fit them for the battle of life in a reconstructed world, said Mr West. The principal. Dr. D. E. Hansen, gave statistics of classes and the numbers of students attending them, and said that attendance at the college must mean a great deal in raising the standard of tradesmanship in Christchurch. It was hoped that the Minister for Education, and Cabinet, would see fit to authorise a grant for the erection of a large workshop block. The plans, submitted last year, were drawn in such a way that the new building could constitute the first stage in the complete rebuilding of the college. However, the school could accommodate all who wished to attend. PAPANUI BRANCH

SUCCESSFUL YEAR . REVIEWED "I Have a cow. It eats, drinks, and wanders about, produces milk and an occasional calf. The highest ambition of some people is the life of a cow, but I would call it a cow of a life. We must learn that this is not the be all and end all of life, and realise that there are finer aspirations in life, as the attainment of high culture and the giving of community service.” This parable was told by the Rev. E. A. Osmers in his address at the prize-giving ceremony at the Papanul branch of the Christchurch Technical College yesterday afternoon. To the prize-winners, Mr Osmers said that the trophies meant a lot, and rightly so, but a person was highly honoured who could also gain respect through service. To those who had not won prizes he would say that most of the people of the world were the ordinary ones who each contributed what they could to the common good The teachers had earned their holidays and the pupils would gladly give them. The principal (Mr J. B. Mcßride) reviewed the year's work, detailing the successes in all fields which the college had achieved, and mentioning the many new features introduced. He especially appealed to parents to leave their children at school until they had secured permanent positions or entered employment

which, had definite prospects for improvement There was a heavy toll of junior pupils going into temporary positions. The school careers’ advisers should be consulted. “Success in life is not judged in knowledge and operative skill but in terms of loyalty and conscientious work,” Mr McBride concluded. The chairman of the board (Mr T. W. West) congratulated the school on its progress. Mrs Mcßride and Mr Osmers presented the girls’ and boys’ prizes respectively.
