SECOND WOOL APPRAISAL

Yaluing To Begin On January 8 PRICES FOR PIECES

The second appraisal of wool in Christchurch will begin on January 8. Wool is coming in rapidly from the country at present, and a good deal of that valued last week will have to be moved if congestion in the stores is to be avoided. The highest prices so far reported are 19d per lb in Christchurch and 20id in Blenheim. These prices are regarded as very good, considering that they were obtained on appraisal and not at auction, where high prices are almost always obtained for the best wools through competition among local mills.

Local mills this season are given first choice of the wool. In practice, the local men indicate what wool they require, and it is marked and appraised. If more than one mill wants one lot of wool, an arrangement is made among the mills. The system precludes “fancy” prices being paid but only an insignificant portion of the New Zealand clip is affected. Up to 16d per lb was paid for pieces during the first appraisal at Christchurch. The prices generally were considerably better than those last year. The following is the full range of prices obtained at Christchurch. It appears unlikely that the range will be altered this season.
