ONE-MAN FACTORIES
MOVE TO STOP UNFAIR COMPETITION UNION’S SUGGESTION TO MINISTER IFBESS ABSOOUTIOK TBUtOHAU.) AUCKLAND, December 13. An Auckland union, the members of which are engaged in an important manufacturing industry, has made reEresentations to the Minister for Laour (the Hon. P, C. Webb), urging him to bring down legislation to prevent one-man factories working unlimited hours. The suggestion advanced for the Minister’s consideration is that legislation similar to that in New South Wales should \be designed for New Zealand, stipulating that an employer must not operate his factory before a specified time in the morning, and must be off the premises at a set time in the evening, unless a permit is secured granting permission for overtime to be worked. It is thought by the union that this would meet the case of a one-man factory,' and eliminate unfair competition by him with an employer compelled to observe an award. In the Industry concerned, the employers are also interesting themselves in the matter, and will probably approach the Minister, who' has already promised consideration of the union’s proposal. ■
