PATRIOTIC FUNDS IN LAST WAR
TO THB BDITOB OB THB PRESS. Sir,—l notice the South Canterbury Patriotic Society has taken exception to the remarks of the Hon. W. E, Parry about patriotic funds in the last war. I wonder if those gentleman read the leading article in “The Press” nearly two months ago, when it gave wide publicity about the £5,000,000 collected in New Zealand during the last war? Your article condemned the past practice of collections, and added that not in few cases there was mismanagement and scandal connected with them. You ably recommended different methods, and gave threequarters of a column on extravagant collection, and actual misappropriation and wasteful expenditure. If “The Press” is able to express its views so widely, then why not Mr Parry? I wonder if the Patriotic Society in South Canterbury is a believer in free speech, or is it biased politically—one wonders.—Yours, etc., 1 ALL BRITISH. December 12, 1939.
