THE FLOOD OF 1868

In, 1800 a big flood took place. My great-aunt, Who is Still living, was a small girl.. She lived in a sod house, when her father built the house he put a bluegum post

at each corner, so that when the flood came the bluegum posts kept the sods together. Out in the yard there was a horse called trimmer, who was tied up, and as my uncle saw that the flood was rising he went out and untied, the horse, After the flood the horse was •found two miles away. The mother of Trimmer was used by the draymen to pull the drays full of stones, rocks, and soil out Of the Lyttelton tunnel. Down at the store during the flood the people from the hotel and store went to seek refuge in the loft df the stables, which are still standing. As the people had ho food with them, they ate pigeon eggs. They were without other food until someone from Mount Grey'Botyns brought some food, for them, (aged 12).
