WEDNESDAY (Before Mr F. F. Reid, S.M.) REMANDED
Archibald William Cahill was remanded until October 2'i on a charge of resisting a constable in the execution of his duty and on a further charge of using obscene language. Colin Algernon Warne, charged with the theft of 10s in money, was remanded until November 1. THEFT ADMITTED
Selwyn James Tregear was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on in two years, on a charge of stealing £lO. He pleaded guilty. ' Detective-Sergeant j. McClung said that accused, who was a member of the Canterbury Yacht Club, had taken the money from the wallet of another member. Some £6 had been recovered. The Magistrate warned accused that should he appear again for theft he could be sentenced on this charge at any time within the two years, and would be certain of a prison term. He was ordered, also, to make restitution of the full amount, within two months. TRAM FARE NOT PAID Sam Eastgate, for not paying a 7d tram fare, was ordered to pay costs, a witness’s expenses, and solicitor’s fee, a total of £1 15s. Mr J. D. Hutchison, for the Tramway Board, said the defendant had been told on the tram, when he could not pay his fare, to pay it at the board’s office. He had failed to do that, and to reply to two letters sent him. “It will be an expensive ride,” commented the Magistrate. BUILDER FINED Percival George Godfrey, a builder, was ordered to pay costs for adding to existing premises without a permit from the City Council. Mr W. R. Lascelles, who represented the council, said such prosecutions had to be taken, so as to impress upon builders the necessity for permits to do such work. CLEARING OF GORSE
Ronald Smith Badger (Mr J. R. Cuningham) and Clarence William Oliver were each ordered to pay costs on charges of failing within the time stipulated to clear gorse from their properties. Mr F. Wilding appeared for the prosecuting authority, the Heathcote County Council. It was stated that the sections affected had now been cleared.
UNLICENSED RADIO SETS *ln cases brought by the Post and Telegraph Department, the following penalties were imposed for operating unlicensed radio sets:— Harold Bradshaw. ss; Michael Leo Buckley, 12s; Cecil Craig, 12s 6d; William Cooper, ss; Maurice Selwyn Gumming. 12s 6d: Myrtle Dwight, convicted and discharged; Sydney William Fitzsimmons, 10s; Julia Gaye. 15s; Richard Grant, ss; Henry Isaacs, 12s, 6d; Charles Arthur Kirk, 20s; Frank Mawson, 10s; Charlotte Elizabeth Salisbury, 355; Reginald Edmund Suckling, 12s 6d; William Dow Sullivan, 12s 6d. WATER IN MILK
Kenneth McLaughlin (Mr C. S. Thomas) was fined £3 and ordered to pay costs for selling milk containing 6 per cent, of added water. For the defence it was stated that McLaughlin had put no water in the milk himself. He bought his supply from an outside source. He had a high-class round, and had never had a previous conviction. The Magistrate commented that defendant was not charged with putting water in the milk, but. with selling milk to which water had been added.However, he would take the circumdisclosed by counsel into account in fixing the penalty.
