RAC ING AND TROTTING

INVERCARGILL T.C.

ACCEPTANCES

(PEE 33 ASSOCIATION TELEGBAiI.) INVERCARGILL,. October 25. The following are the acceptances for the Invercargill Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday:—

MIGHT WIN STEWARDS’

HANDICAP

BEAULIVRE’S PROSPECTS

(By Carbine.)

Although Beaulivre has been racing over longer journeys than six furlongs he has such great natural speed that he might win the Stewards’ Handicap. Only one of the six races he has contested this season was run over six furlongs, and in it he was fully extended by Screen Star. That was at the combined hunts meeting at New Plymouth in August. Since then he has improved, and the “straight” Rxccarton course should be more to his liking than that in Taranaki. Beaulivre has won four mile races and one 10-furlong race since then. His winnings this year total £ 1985, so he is quickly earning the 2900 guineas paid for him at the Higgins dispersal Beaulivre’s weight is 61b above weight-fnr-age. Three-year-olds have had a fair share of success in the Stewards, having won a dozen of the races which have been contested since 1890. The heaviest weight carried successfully by one of the age was the 8-9 with which Machine Gun won in 1903. Other three-year-old winners were Clanranald i(8-5), Stepniak (7-10), Golden Fleece- (7-4), Pampero (7-4), Boyal Artillery (7-10), Vladimir <7-8|), Gold Crest (8-3), Bon Reve (8-6), Stardancer (6-7), Warstep (6-13}), Eulalie (8-1), Autopay (7-2), and Paper Slipper (8-5). Bon Reve and Stardancer dead heated. Beaulivre’s principal mission at Riccarton will be the New Zealand Derby, but there appears to be no reason why he should not run a great race in the Stewards’ * beforehand.. He is a sweet galloper,-'and if he retains his form Rkcarton patrons 'will see a really good horse in action.

TROTTING NOTES

A Reminder Final payments for the New Zealand Cup must be made by 5 p.m. today. Wellington Trotting Club The Wellington Trotting Club’s spring meeting will- be held at Hutt Park on Saturday. The fields are comprised mostly of Canterburytrained horses; but an Auckland contingent on its way to Addington will add interest to the racing.

Prospective Winners Frisco Boy and Acuity were both unlucky at the Oamaru meeting, and may be expected to show winning form soon. When the barrier rose the tape became entangled in a wheel of the sulky drawn by Frisco-Boy, and as the race progressed this became firmly wound round the hub of the wheel and acted as a very effective brake. Frisco Boy, however, showed enough dash to suggest that he is near his best and he may prove a good winner for M. B. Edwards. Acuity, too, suffered because of the barrier not working correctly, and after going away smartly she went to a tangle and had to be eased. Acuity may have to be reckoned with in immediate engagements. A Coming Champion

In'his last two starts, Southern Chiet has so completely outclassed his field as to raise a question as to how good he really is. In his last four starts on grass tracks he has shown the form of a champion, and if he can reproduce his best at Addington it will not be long before he is racing among the best horses in New Zealand. When first he went into R. B- Berry’s stable it seemed to be a question as to who should be master —the horse or the trainer, and in' at least two races Southern Chief seemed to have the advantage. This was not quite the way that appealed to Berry, who showed at the next outing that horse and driver had a perfect understanding as to what was required. At the Methven meeting in June Southern Chief won the President’s Handicap by six lengths in 4.25 4-5 from a 4.38 mark, and two days later won the Acton Handicap of two miles at Ashburton in 4.21 from a 4.35 mark. At the Methven meeting on September 30 he made an exhibition of the field in winning by 12 lengths in 4.26 1-5. His latest victory in 4.20 1-5 stamps Southern Chief as a good stayer and one worthy of entry in the New Zealand Cup. Improving Pacers Cruiser was always going nicely in the President’s Handicap at Oamaru, and he was definitely superior to all but' Southern Chief. Though he had no chance with the winner, it was no trouble for him to dispose of the pretensions of. Great Divide. and Red Pigeon, who ran a dead-heat for third place. For a period during the race Great Divide attempted to make a race of it with Southern Chief; but the task proved much beyond him. He is near the top of his form, however, and as this race would do him

little harm he is likely to be well fancied in immediate engagements. Both Cruiser and Great Divide should win races in the near future.

May Do Better Icevus is a solid little pacer; but m his two races at Oamaru he met pacers just too good for him on a grass track. He may do better on the clay track at Addington. In Great Order

Plutus looks particularly well, although still a bit on the big side, and there appears a reason for the confidence reposed in him by his connexions. To have won at Oamaru he would need to have broken all existing records for a mile and a quarter, but at one period of the race he showed great brilliance and in a slower race might have sprinted with the leaders. C. S. Donald has trained many fine horses, but has yet to lead in a New Zealand Cup winner. A victory for the Belfast stable would be most popular for it is not only one of the strongest stables in New Zealand, but Donald and his patrons are most liberal in their support of meetings in all parts of New Zealand.

TURF GOSSIP

Rehandicapped

Hunting Cat has been rehandicapped from 7-1 to 7-5 in the New Zealand Cup. and Globe Trotter has been rehandicapped from 7-4 to 7-6 in the Stewards’ Handicap. Back from Sydney F. D. Jones returned to Riccarton yesterday with Royal Chief and Moorsotis. The former has recovered from the soreness which troubled him for a while after winning the Randwick Plate, and it is confidently hoped that he will take his place in the New Zealand Cup field. Royal Chief did not do as well on this trio as he did 12 months ago, but in spite of an unbroken neriod of hard tracks, he raced Quite satisfactorily, and in addition to his win in the Plate, dead-heated in the Colin Stephens Stakes, 'and was placed in other events. his stakesamounting to close on £ 1200. Moorsotis was’ disaonointing in the several races contested, and had a second placing to his credit only. Mounting Tip By his win in the Harcourt Stakes at Trentham on .Monday. Beaulivre brought his stake eaminss. since he was nnrehased in July for 2900 guineas, to £I9BO. New Totalisator The totalisators owned by Mr W. F. James have been removed from Washdyke. and a start has been made with the remodelling of the building to suit th new indicator machine which is to be used for the first time at the trotting club’s meeting in December. No Supporters The redbrd dividend for a race at Gore was in 1898. when Ruth paid £144. She was ridden by her owner, who allowed her to run unbacked. There have been two cases of horses winning without being suoported on the machine —Antrim in 1893 and Governor in 1897. In the early days of racing all investments were returned in cases of this kind, but nowadays tb dividend would be paid on the next horse. A Poor Response

The nominations received by the Otautau Racing Club for its meeting on November 4 are very disappointing, and it does not look as if the fixture could be successfully carried out with so'few horses engaged. Evidently the experiment of clashing with the New Zealand Cup meeting is /not a good one. A Doubtful Case

When the field In the Flying Handicap turned into the straight at Gore bn Saturday. Lord Nuffield, who had been well placed over the first halfmile. was travelling like a winner, but halfway down the straight he stopped very suddenly and was one of the last to finish. When he returned to the saddling enclosure his saddle and girths were round his flanks, and many pf his backers, attributed his defeat to carelessness in saddling up, but the trouble was much more serious. Lord Nuffield was very lame when he returned to the paddock, and broke down in the fetlock that Caused his retirement last season. He is now a very unlikely starter in the Stewards Handicap next month.
