OBITUARY

MR EDWARD YOUNG

(From Out Own Reporter.]. WESTPORT, October 25. Mr Edward Young, who is a first cousin of the Prime Minister of Britain (Mr Neville Chamberlain), his died at Westport. Born at Scone, Scotland, and educated at the Edinburgh and London Universities, he came to New Zealand in 1886 to join his brothers, Messrs Robert and Henry Young, who were engineers to the Midland Railway Company. At Westport Mr Young established a school for advanced students in mathematics, engineering, languages, and journalism. He was a noted linguist, and was the first person in New, Zealand to acquire the Zeamanhof diploma for Esperanto. He made a reputation as a novelist and poet, and many of his efforts were published in well-known journals throughout the British Empire. A collection of his poems is in the hands of a London publisher to be made into book form. Mr Young, with the late Mr J. Bradley, founded the Westport School of Mines, and for 17 years acted gratuitously as its secretary. Messrs H. A. Young, S.M. (Christchurch), and H. R. Young, who is at present in England, are nephews, and Mrs Robinson (Christchurch) is a niece.
