PUBLIC WORKS POLICY
RELATIONSHIP TO PRODUCTION
SHEEPOWNERS PASS RESOLUTION
The possibility of obtaining sufficient labour to carry on production was discussed yesterday by the executive of the Canterbury Sheepowners’ Union. A view was expressed that now that about £20.000,000 was being allotted annually for Public Works, this service seemed to be regarded as an industry, and there was an inducement for men to take on this type of employment. The shortage created for other productive industries had been accentuated by the enlistment, of such a large number of men in the Special Military Force. . The following resolution was carried unanimously:— . . “That while sheepowners in Canterbury are desirous to increase production to the full extent possible, this meeting is unanimously of the opinion that, an increase will not be possible until the present Public Works I policy is reviewed, as it must retard, rather than increase, production, if [persisted in.”
