Camping Hints —111 THE SITE

It should not be difficult to find a catnp site, though the ideal site Is rare. In many country places there are grounds set apart for campers, but these are always well populated, so if you want a camp all to yourself just keep your eyes open during the day’s tramp, and be ready to pitch camp even in the early afternoon if you find a good Spot. Don’t camp without first getting permission, unless you are

prepared to run the risk of being moved on by an irate farmer who objects to campers on his property. There is not really very much to be said about the choice of a site. Campers who pitch their tent on swampy or sloping ground, in ploughed fields, or on the exposed crest of a hill, deserve whatever misfortunes come their way. Pitch your tent facing north if possible, choose the leeward side of a hedge, and avoid trees, even if your camp is only for the night.
