AUSTRALIAN ISSUES AGAIN ADVANCE MARKETS GENERALLY REMAIN FIRM The outstanding feature of interest in the business on the Christchurch Stock Exchange yesterday was the further advance in the price of . several Australian, securities. Markets generally continued firm, but the turnover was restricted to a few stocks. New Zealand Government 4 per cent, stock, due 1946, changed hands at £9B 12s 6d, and there were further buyers at that price. Buyers of the bonds, due 1955, raised their bids to £97, no sellers offering.

Bank of Australasia were firmer on buyers’ offers, £8 12s 6d. Buyers of Commercial Bank/of Australia moved up to' 15s 6d, but sellers were reticent. Bank of New South Wales claimed buyers at £2B 15s. Felt and Textiles were stronger, with buyers at 32s 9d. New Zealand Breweries had dealings at 35s lid and 365, and there were further buyers at the higher price, sellers at 375. British Tobacco, in their first local turnover for a month, scored a rise of 4s, with business at 51s, and there were further buyers at that figure, sellers at 525. Broken Hill Proprietary advanced 3s 6d to 80s and 795, market closing 79s buyers, 80s 3d sellers. D.unlop Rubber at 21s were 3s up on last local business. Electrolytic Zinc advanced to 625, and late offers at 61s 9d failed to attract sellers. A late sale of the preference on Friday was reported at 61s 6d. Business yesterday was at 635, and there were further buyers at that figure, sellers at 655. G. J. Coles were stronger, with buyers at 77s 6d. Buyers of Woolworths (N.Z.) moved up to 17s 4d, but sellers were reticent. New River were steady at ll£d, market closing id either way. There was a close market for Grey River, which were quoted at 16s lid buyers, 17s sellers. Ngahere rose sharply to 245, and more were wanted at that price, sellers at 255. LOWER TIN PRODUCTION TINPLATE OUTPUT RISES World tin production in the first seven months of 1939 amounted to an average of 11,000 tons a mohth, compared . with 12,380 tons a month for the corresponding period last year. Production of the seven signatory countries to the international agreement decreased from an average of 9947 tons to an average of 8653 tons.

As a result of the increase in quotas, the monthly permissible exports under the control scheme for the third quarter increased by 9295 tons to 17,331 tons. World apparent consumption, which in 1938 amounted to 12,600 tons a month on an average, decreased to 12,440 tons.

World tinplate production amounted to 2,230,000 tons., against 1,744,000 tons in the corresponding period of 1938, an increase of 28 per cent. World automobile output amounted to 3,165.000 vehicles, against 2,293,000 vehicles in the corresponding month of 1938, being an increase of 38 ]ser cent.
