FLOODING AT REDCLIFFS
REQUEST BY BURGESSES’
ASSOCIATION MEETING OF SUMNER BOROUGH COUNCIL * A letter from the Redcliffs Burgesses’ Association to the Sumner Borough Council at its meeting last evening drew attention to the flooding of sections adjoining the rifle range at Redclifls. The Defence Department proposed cutting a drain to overcame the difficulty, and the association asked the council to facilitate the work.
Present at the meeting were: The Mayor (Mr J. E. Tait), Crs. F. T. Eldridge, I. J. Wilson, W. J. Duff, J. L. Gant, E. A. M. Roberts, P. C. Fenwick, and C. E. Claydon.
Cr. Eldridge said that the outbreak of war had stopped the work in the meantime.
The association also asked if a representative from the council would attend the next meeting to explain the basis of the new charges for electricity and to discuss ambulance matters and emergency precautions. The Mayor and Crs.’ Chitty and Wilson were appointed. A complaint from the association of the inadequacy of fire protection and a request for information of the facilities available were referred to the superintendent, Mr G. Harper, for a re'port. \ Cr. Eldridge reported on a conference on the raising of patriotic funds. It appeared, he said,' that at present the only purpose for using funds was for buying band instruments and for Young Men’s Christian Association activities. The council was now required to appoint a representative to a local committee to find ways and means of raising funds. Cr. Gant moved that the appointment be held, over for a month. At the previous meeting of the council the town clerk was asked to .bring down a new by-law for the control ox dogs. A by-law submitted last evening by the town clerk was thought to be too drastic and discussion was deferred till the next meeting, when the town clerk will bring down an amended bylaw.
The town clerk said that he had been in touch with the engineer of the Main Highways Board, who had come down to have a look at a dangerously narrow part of the main highway to Lyttelton. The engineer had said that he would arrange for levels and a survey to be made. If a kerb was put. there now the grade of the footpath' would have to be altered when the road was centred. It was decided to draw the attention of the Main Highways Board to the position and to suggest that/ provision be made for putting the crown of the road in its proper place. It would then be necessary to shift the pole and construct a kerb. The gas, electrical and waterworks engineer (Mr A. A. Cheshire), was granted permission to attend the Gas Engineers’ Conference at Auckland during November.
