ROWING

OPENING OF THE SEASON NOVELTY EVENTS ARRANGED A cross-country race for teams from'the rowing clubs will be one of the numerous novelty events at the opening of the rowing season on the Avon on Saturday. The course will include several crossings of the river on which the competitors are accustomed to travel in the comfort, or at least the comparative dryness, of their racing shells. Pillow-fighting on a greasy pole will be another amusing event. The committee of the Canterbury Rowing Association last evening adopted the following programme of races for the opening day:—3 p.m., maiden double sculls, first heat, Avon v. Canterbury: 3.5, youths’ fours, first heat, Christ’s College v Canterbury; 3.15, maiden double sculls, second heat, Christ’s College v. Union; 3 30, junior double sculls, first heat, Canterbury v. Union; 3,35, youths’ fours, second heat. Union v. Avon; 3.40, maiden double sculls, final; 3.50, youths’ fours, final; 4 p.m., junior double sculls, final, Avon v. winner of tire first heat.

STATUS OF ROWERS DIFFERENTIATION IN EIGHTS EVENTS The committee of the Canterbury Rowing Association at a meeting last evening decided to adhere to its decision to support the move by the Auckland Association to have separate status for fouroared rowing and eight-oared rowing. It was stated that the proposed rule would make weaker clubs less reluctant to enter eight-oared crews in races if oarsmen were not to be graded on results in such races. • The association’s delegate to the New Zealand Association, M*' M. A. Turner, in a letter to the committee, said the proposal would open up a big question, as pair-oared rowing and double-sculling as against single sculling would be affected. Members of the committee agreed that the distinction need not apply to pairs and sculls, and decided to adhere to its former decision.
