STREET APPEAL REALISED £499 The monthly meeting of the Plunket Society was held in the Plunket rooms, with Mrs J. Cracroft Wilson presiding over a good attendance. Miss A. Buckley, a new member, was welcomed to the committee. It was announced that consequent upon Mrs Young’s resignation, the executive had appointed Mrs S. P. Godfrey to act with Mrs Malcolm Gray on the Karitane tion committee. They will be in attendance at the Plunket. the first Friday of each month to interview prospective trainees. The appointjnent of Nurse Shepherd to the Christchurch district was confirmed. Mrs Wyatt reported that so far the amount realised for Plunket Day was £499, and there -were still a few "amounts to come in. Mrs Cracroft Wilson (president) expressed thanks to all who had helped to make the appeal such a success, and especially mentioned Mr G. L. Donaldson, who, this year,/ had completed his twentyfifth year as cashier. The committee was al«o grateful to the branches and sub-branches who had sent in flowers for sale. , ' It was reported that the amount in hand for the Truby King Memorial Fund was £365. and it was now proposed to. close the appeal. Since the last meeting, the Waikari branch and Oxford sub-branch had both sent in £lO to furnish a.bedroom at the Karitane Hospital. Donations towards the. Karitane Maintenance Fund had been received as follows: —Waikari branch, £5 ss, Ellesmere sub-branch £2 8s 7d, and Tengawai sub-branch £1 Is. - For the Lady King Karitane Hospital, the matron reported that 17 babies had been admitted during the month, and 11 had been discharged. Seven mothers had been admitted to the Mothercraft Cottage, and seven had been discharged. Babies had been admitted from Methven, Timaru, Temuka, Belfast. Clarence Bridge, Westport, and Christchurch. For the Plunket rooms. Nurse Allan reported as follows: —Pre-natal sect ion; Expectant mothers interviewed for the first time, 28; expectant mothers under observation, 138. Post-natal section: New baby cases, city and suburbs 12/, outstations 25. Visits to homes: City and suburbs 540, outstations 62 Visits to rooms: Central, 1147 adults, 1387 babies; suburban, 1391 adults, 1387 babies. Pre-school children: New cases 31, number seen 191. It was reported that classes in “mothercraft” arranged so that Red Cross workers might; obtain a knowledge of the care of expectant mothers, babies, and older children, in any emergency, were in progress, and had been well attended. STRATHEONA MONTH’S , ACTIVITIES ' REVIEWED At a meeting of the board of managers of Stratheona Home Training Hostel, held at Timaru, the matron (Mrs Harper) gave a report of activities at the hostel during the month. Instruction had been given by Miss Lynn in the growing' of onions; ground had been prepared and a crop sown. Many other vegetables had been sown, and the opportunity had been taken during school holidays to do the spring cleaning. , , ’ ... The average number of school children taking lunch daily at the hostel had been 12, and the highest number had been 15. , . ~ During Mrs Harper s holiday, the acting-matron, Mrs J. McLeod had given trainees their half-yearly tests and cookery demonstrations. Mrs A. H. Gillingham had given lectures on nutrition, and Mr J. Johnson, Workers’ Educational Association tutor, had given a lecture on household budgeting and accounts. . Arrangements had been made for the Plunket nurse to commence instruction. Mrs Andrews and Mrs Satterthwaite were appointed visitors for the month. Gifts were gratefully acknowledged from the Southburn branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, Mrs Simmons (Ashburton), Temuka Women’s Institute, Miss I. Ward, Ashwick Flat and Fairlie Women’s Institutes Mrs Douglas, Fairlie branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, Miss Marion Mclntosh, Miss Norma Weenink, Mrs B. E. Evans, Mr Glenday, Winchester Institute, Hilton Women’s Institute, Mrs Chittpck. Miss Washbourne (Christchurch), Kingsdown branch of the Women’s Divisionof the Farmers’ Union, and Mrs H. E. Smith. Arrangements were made for an entertainment, to be held at Pleasant Point next month in aid of funds. Mrs A. H. Gillingham presided-at the meeting AFTERNOON PARTY On Saturday afternoon Mrs S. G. Henry entertained several friends at her home in honour of Miss Joan Wareing, whose marriage will take place shortly. • • The guests, who brought kitchen gifts for Miss Wareing, included:— Mesdames J.
