RACING AND TROTTING

WARDRESS WINS

GERALDINE MEETING CONCLUDED

LADY LEIGH AND SHANGHAI LILY * SUCCEED The Geraldine Racing Club was favoured with dull but fine weather for the second day of its annual meeting on the Orari racecourse on Saturday, and the attendance was much larger than on the first day. . A feature was the large assemblage of motor-cars, which, although well below the number 12 months ago, when there was a record attendance,, filled the major, part of the enclosure. Speculation was reasonably brisk, but there was a substantial drop in the turnover. The sum of £11,397 10s was handled, as against £14,280 10s on the second day last year. The total for the two days was £19,271 10s, as compared with £23,681 last year, a decrease of £4410. Both days’ programmes were dispatched with promptitude, and the racing was voted to be the interesting seen at Orari in recent'years. The president, Mr D. Macdonald, and vice-presidents. Messrs G. Fletcher and C. Stock, assisted oy an energetic committee, carried out their various duties with every satisfaction, and the secretary, Mr W. F. Evans, who was assisted by Mr . H. H. Fraser, of • Timaru. had the arrangements well organised. The President’s Handicap was won in an impressive manner by Wardress, who was making her first appearance in open company. On the first day she was made a lot of use of under her big weight in her hack engagement. but - vidently the race left a beneficial effect. She was called upon for a difficult task over the final furlong, but finished with a stubborn effort to wear down Queen Dorothy and Valantua in the last few strides. Lady Leigh, on ground to her liking, added to her consistent record by a ■win in the Stewards’ Stakes. Unfortunately, she returned in a lame con- - dition, and this game mare may have her restricted but creditable career cut short by unsoundness. „ . Flame Queen made amends for. her first day’s defeat by a comfortable win - in the Gladstone Hack Handicap, her form being a marked improvement Qp her previous display. Shanghai Lily recorded her second - success on the trip by a meritorious win in the South Canterbury Cham- '' pion Hack Handicap; and Travenna, - evidently improved by his first day.s effort, was responsible for a high grade performance in carrying - 12-1 to victory in the hurdle event. NOTES ON THE RACING Improved Performance Travenna, after his good race, on Thursday, and with a track tq suit him, was confidently supported to win the Second Hurdles, and he justified the move by a narrow but impressive win. The rank outsider of the field. Fundy Bay, went to the front early and soon opened up a big break, which he held until he was checked by a faulty • effort two fences from home. Travenna then drew up to him and was almost on terms at the last, fence. Travenna appeared to be in for a comfortable win when he headed off the leader early In the run home, but Fundy Bay was not to be denied and Travenna had to be ridden right out to -gain a head victory. The remainder were well out of the contest. Mount Val finishing the best of them to secure third money from a bunch comprising Pink Robe, Bit o’ Blue, and King Icel. Guspini Opens Account With St. Cloud taken out of the Wainui Hack Handicap, Investors had trouble In deciding on a favourite, but in, any case all of the well supported candidates were beaten. Swingtime and Midguard disputed the lead to the straight entrance, with Guspini, Murlet, Great Night, and Nlgella next. Guspini ran past the. leaders a furlong from home and carfled on for an easy win from Midguard. Racewell came from well back to separate Midguard' and Swingtime right on the line. Great Night was close up next. The winner is by Gustavo from Turbine, a .to Water Ppwer, and is held on lease by P. T. Hogan. -Midguard Is a half-brother by Valkyrlan to Epris and Sunnyland. and Racewell Is by Night Raid from Ilida, by Hlad from Ebba. Wardress’s Handicap A high-class field paraded for the President’s Handicap, and one of the best contests seen at Orari for a lojig time was staged. The Sandwichman and Glenogil were the early leaders, and they led through the back stretch from Wagner, Silver Slipper. Valantua, Roy Bun, and Wardress. Glenogil and Wagner were both done with at the straight entrance, and The Sandwlchman still had charge from a bunch containing Valantua, Queen Dorothy. Balmenter, Second Innings. Roy Bun, Gay Rebel, and Wardress. The Sandwlchmah gave way to Queen Dorothy about 50 yards from the post, and then Wardress shot through between them to go on for a spectacular win by half a length from Queen Dorothy. 1 Balmenter finished very fast to overhaul Valantua on the line, with Second Innings at the head of the remainder. Full of Merit Lady Milne was responsible for an outstanding effort to win the Domain Trot from 72 yards. Waikari Chief, Kansas City, Lady Truman, Diviner, and Albertini were the early leaders; but when the back stretch was entered upon Lady Truman had charge from Manawai, Albertini, and Starace, with Lady Milne fast making up leeway. Manawai led into the straight from Lady Milne. Passing By, Starace. and Albertini all in fairly close order. Lady Milne had no trouble In heading off Manawai in the run home, while Passing By held his place to gain third money from Albertini, with Kansas City and Diviner next. Flame Queen Improves Donadea and Asia disputed favouritism in the Gladstone Hack Handicap. Donadea finished third; but-Asia failed badly. Improvident was the first to show out; but at the end of two furlongs Phenomenal was in change from Improvident, Flame Queen. Donadea. and Ohmaha. Im-_ provident weakened turning for home and Flame Queen followed Phenomenal into the straight, with Donadea' moving Into third place; Flame Queen gradually wore down Phenomenal; yet she had to be kept up to her work to win by a length. Donadea was a good third, with Improvident four lengths away in front of Sunny Dawn, Sunny Dawn was last away and Chirp and Aggravate also lost ground at the start. Opponents Outclassed Grey Night, win favourite for the Stewards’ Stakes, tried to lead throughout. He was accompanied to the straight'entrance by Jan Ridd, and when the latter retired a furlong from home Lady Leigh challenged Grey Night, who weakened 100 yards from the post, and Lady Leigh went on for a decisive .win. but was nevertheless vigorously ridden right to the post by her apprentice rider. Five lengths away Skyrena beat Paper. Note and Brilliant Boa. A Narrow Victory The Winchester Trot resulted In a close finish between Glenholme and Jerry Parrish. who both headed the pacemaker. Tiny Axworthy, a furlong from home, and engaged In a long struggle. Glenholme getting up In the last few strides: Equerry was a fair third, two lengths in front of 'Lady Milne. Erin’s Lad lost his driver shortly after the start. A Solid Filly 'Shanghai Lily and Capricious had their first day’s battle over again in "the final

NOTES ON THE RACING [THE PRESS Special Servlce.l WELLINGTON. September 23. An improved Trotter Beginning smartly, Allworthy went to the front from the start of. the Nai Nai Handicap and he was always going easily to record an Impressive win. In the early stages he was followed by Sphinx, Blworthy, Violet Wrack, and Chudic, with Shadeland. who was slowly away, at the head of the others. With half a mile to go, Blworthy moved up to be on terms with the leader, and these two came Into the straight well clear of.Sphinx. Biworthy finished on solidly but he was outclassed and Allworthy won with plenty in reserve. Chudic was running on in third place after making early mistakes, and Violet Wrack, who broke, twice in the final quarter, was fourth. Sphinx did the best of the others. Mackscot Succeeds An overdue win was recorded when Mackscot won the Sharpe Handicap in a good finish from Excell and Scottie Direct. Mackscot began quickly and when the field had settled down he was showing the way to Wishful, Excell, Scottie Direct, Neon -Oro, Brungasta, and Don Walla. There was little change in the order of running and Mackscot was still In command at the home turn from Wishful, Excell, Scottie Direct, and Brungasta. Mackscot had to be driven right but to stall off Excel! by half a length, with Scottie Direct a neck fbrther back. Neon Oro was close up fourth. Just clear of Max Havoc, Brungasta. and First Shake. This was Mackscot’s first success after numerous opportunities, and he was not greatly Impressive. With a better run in the final stages Excell would have beaten the winner, while Scottie Direct may also have reversed the tables if his run had not \ been delayed. The last-named is likely to do better at an early date. Great Jewel In Form Another - end-to-end victory was registered in the Sir Thomas Wilford Memorial Handicap, Great Jewel leading throughout. There was little pace on in the first half-mile and Great Jewel was followed by Red Pigeon, Windsor Lass. Great Divide, and Marlene, with Bill B„ who was slowly away, five lengths further back. The last-named made a smart move at the end of five furlongs and with half the journey covered he was up wtih the stages of the South Canterbury Champion Hack Handicap, with. Shanghai Lily winning easier than on the first day. Fascinator showed a burst of speed by opening up a big break early, and holding on to it until well • Into the straight. She was followed Into the home run by Prince Ruenalf, Capricious, Merry March, and Shanghai Lily, and when she weakened Inside the distance Capricious showed out; but Shanghai Lily soon drew up to Capricious. The pair raced abreast for a few strides, but Shanghai Lily was always going the better and won well by a length. Merry March toas a similar distance away in front of Knight Commander and Master Dingle. '

leader, Red Pigeon. Great Divide, Windsor Lass, and Marlene following in close order. Great Jewel held a clear advantage at the home bend, with Red Pigeon, Bill 8., Great Divide, and Marlene in line across the track. The leader was not troubled and he scored easily from Windsor Lass, who came with a late run after losing her position in the middle stages. There was little between Marlene and Red Pigeon, but Great Divide and Bill B. both failed to finish on. Better favoured in the running. Windsor Lass would have given the winner greater opposition, but Great Jewel gave one of his best performances and on the day he proved a class above his field. A Solid Juvenile With a determined finishing run. Gallant Chief won the Wellington Stakes in fine style. He was well back in the early running, but he moved up with half a mile to go to be second into the straight, and his superior stamina saw him carry the day in a decisive manner. Josette, Latest Edition, and Three Tens all failed to begin correctly and Imperial Jade was the first to show out from Durability and Gallant Chief. However, Latest Edition made up his ground smartly to be in front at the end of half a mile, and with a round covered he was in charge from Three Tens, Imperial Jade, Durability, Gallant Chief, Shady Glen, and Josette. Gallant Chief showed speed down the back to follow Three Tens into the straight, and when he challenged the leader he soon placed the issue beyond doubt, although he had to be kept up to his work to win by a length and a half from Three Tens, with Imperial Jade four lengths away in third place. Gallant Chief stayed on well after having none the best of the running, and he deserved his success. Three Tens was far from disgraced. Apart from a slow beginning, he looked as if he required the run, and he should Drove .equal to the best three-year-old standard later in the season. Imperial Jade had every chance but was not good enough, while Latest Edition was beaten a long way from home. Durability failed to come up to expectations. and Shady Glen, who did not appear capable of handling the track, and Josette were far from impressive. Violet Wrack'lmproves Trotting more solidly than in her earlier attempt. when*she was fourth, Violet Wrack finished well to win the Stewards Handicap, after waiting on the leaders until well into-the straight. Sphinx made most of the running, but he was feeling the strain at the home turn, where he was shaded by Biworthy, with Violet Wrack, Bill Grattan. Shadeland. and Allworthy in close attendance. Shadeland appeared the winner at the distance, but Violet Wrack outstayed him in good style. Allworthy gave another impressive performance to be third after being a long way back in the running and meeting with slight interference in the final mile. Biworthy tired into fourth place, with Sphinx and Chudic the best of the others. Bill Grattan left his feet when occupying a good position at the straigfht entrance. , „ A Class Pacer The public gave Josedale Grattan more support than Blaydon in the Railway Handicap, but Blaydon proved greatly superior to the American-bred pacer and scored attractively Rollalong made the early running from Becky Direct, 1 Guy Zolock. Huguenot, Josedale Grattan, and Blaydon, but the last-named made a smart run with half the journey covered to range up with the leader!' while Josedale Grattan also improved his position. Rollalong was under pressure turning for home and he soon gave way to Blaydon, who maintained his advantage to win easily from Josedale Grattan by three lengths. Josedale Grattan did not show the dash expected. but he was well clear of the third horse. Huguenot. Becky Direct did the best of the others. While Josedale Grattan is likely to show marked improvement with time and racing. Blaydon was definitely a class above his field and he should go on to reach the best company, especially over two miles. Sprint to Marlene Assuming command from the start. Marlene had conditions to her liking in the Wellington Handicap, and she outsprmted her opposition in the final quarter. Great Jewel and Red Pigeon failed to move off well, and Marlene had Great Divide. Lightning Lady, and Nervie’s Last as her near-, est attendants when the field had settled down. There was little change in the running with a mile covered, and Marlene came into the straight clear of Great Divide. Lightning Lady. Nervie’s Last, and Horse Power. Marlene had to be driven out, but she was not troubled to win by a length from Nervie’s Last and Horse Power. Great Jewel was fourth after receiving a bad run.
