The Hon. R. Semple (Minister for Public Works) and Mr J. W Nissen (private secretary) arrived in Christchurch yesterday morning. They will return to Wellington on Monday night. , \ The Hon. Mr Justice Northcroft returned from the north yesterday morning by the steamer express. Mr J. Montgomery arrived from the north by the steamer express yesterday morning. Colonel R. Miles, of Army Headquarters, Wellington, arrived from the north yesterday morhirtg by‘the steamer express. The Hons. W. Hayward 'and J. K. Archer, members of the Legislative Council, and Mr T. H. McCombs, M.P., were passengers by the steamer express from the north yesterday morning. Mr John Wood, Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Wbrks Department, returned to Wellington last night. Messrs J. Cracroft Wilson and A. G. Williams were last evening appointed the Heathcote County Council’s representatives on the district committee under the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act. Mr C. O. Coad, senior supervisor of the clerical branch of the Chief Post Office in Auckland, and who is now relieving the chief postmaster at Thames, has been appointed a principal in the office of the director-general, of the department in Wellington. Dr R. S. R. Francis, medical superintendent of the Otaki Sanatorium, who has been engaged in post-graduate study in Britain and Europe, has curtailed his visit and is expected to return to New Zealand in about a month. Mr A. Mcßean, formerly of Auckland, who for four years has been head of the- English section of the Rosenberg International. College, Switzerland, has returned to New Zealand on a holiday visit. ; Captain A. R. Cockerell, D. 5.0., N.Z.S.C., Area Officer for No. 12 Area, and adjutant to the Southland Regiment, will leave Invercargill to-morrow evening to take up a special appointment at Trentham.
Mr T. M- McKewen, accounts clerk of the Palmerston North Hospital Board, has been appointed accountant to the Southland Hospital Board. Mr McKewen has been in the employ of the Palmerston North board for eight years. There were 25 applications for the ' position, which was made vacant through' the resignation of Mr E. A. Grant, who wa!s recently appointed secretary of the Vincent Hospital Board at Clyde.
Dr. S. R. B. Cooke, formerly of Hamilton and Thames, has been appointed head research professor of metallurgy at the Montana School of Mines, Butte, Montana, United States. For the last four years Dr. Cooke has been assistant research professor at the Missouri School of Mines, United States.
Messrs S.’ G, Holland and T. H. McCombs, members of Parliament, were appointed to fill the two vacancies on the local committee of the Canterbury Provincial Buildings Board at the annual meeting in Wellington on Wednesday. The vacancies were caused by the death of Mr E. J. Howard and the loss by Mr H, E. Herring of his seat at the last General Election. The other members of the committee are Mr H. S. S! Kyle (deputy-chairman), the Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, K.C.V.0., K.8.E., and the Hon. J. A. McCullough.
A vote of condolence was passed to the relatives of Mr E. J. Howard at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Provincial Buildings Board in Wellington on Wednesday. The chairman' (the Hon. F. Langstone) paid a tribute to Mr Howatfi, who bad been on tbe local committee since the constitution of the board, and had been chairman since 1933. He. had been untiring in his work for the preservation of the historic old chamber, and his services would be very much missed, said the Minister. Dr. W. T. McFadyen, formerly of, Wellington, who for the last three years has been a refinery chemist for Trinidad Leaseholds, Ltd., the largest producers of oil in the British Empire, is on a holiday visit to New Zealand. After receivinig degrees at Otago University and Victoria University College, Dr. McFadyen obtained a doctorate in philosophy at Leeds University.
Mention of the work of Mr J. A. Redman as secretary and treasurer of the Canterbury Provincial’ Biiildihgs Board for five years until his retirement at the end of 1938 is . made in the annual report of the committee. The report said that the committee desired to place on record its wholehearted appreciation of the manner in which Mr Redman carried out his duties, and for the keen interest he took in all matters cohcerhing the buildings. Since Mr Redman’s resignation the duties had been carried out by his successor, Mr J. W, Harvey..
