NIUE ISLAND. . . •. -y. . ; This is an extract from a letter which Yvonne Anniss received from her pen-friend, a native child, in Niue Island. “Nieu Island is a small rocky island which is in the South Pacific. 1 Twice Niue was pushed' up by a volcano; “There are 12 villages in Niue, with a population of 4215 people. “The island, whose area .is 64,000 acres, is 40 miles in circumference, 13 miles long by 10 miles wide; and has a road round it. It was dis-
covered by the. great -British dis.coverer, Captain James 1774. He landed at Opaahi in Aloft, but he was .driven, away by the natives. We therefore gained the bad name of Savage Island for our peaceful island. “We have.no rivers in Niue, be- • cause the ground is too pordus, and is full of caves. “There are 10 mission schools and two Government schools. : “The chief exports are bananas and kumaras, which the Maui , Pomare takes to New Zealand every month.”
