SPRING FLOWER SHOW

DISPLAY AT GREYMOUTH The annual daffodil show of the Greymouth Horticultural Society, staged at the Town Hall, was well up to previous standards, in spite of bad weather. In the cut flower sections competition was not keen, but this was more than balanced by the excellence of the display of daffodils. The champion bloom, Golden Pedestal, was exhibited by Mr N. Burn, of Boddytown, who also achieved succ -ss in many other sections. The display was particularly well laid out under the direction of Mr R. Cooper, who also judged the daffodil and cut flower sections. The judges for the decorative sections were Mesdames Hambleton and Bush. The special awards were as follows: President’s cup. champion bloom, Golden Pedestal. Mr N. Burn.. Banksia R.H.C. medal; N. Burn, i Mr J. Hassall’s cup (six distinct daf-' fodils), T. PLUNKET SOCIETY AT GREYMOUTH ELECTION OF OFFICERS There was a large attendance at the annual meeting of the Greymouth branch of. the Plunket Society. The Mayor, Mr F. A. Kitchingham, who presided, said that the work of the nurses was increasing considerably, as was shown by the fact that visits to homes and the rooms totalled 19,000 last year. It was satisfactory to no.c that, with one exception, all of the subbranches had increased their credit balances. Their increases were not large, but they indicated that the committees were proceeding energetically with their work. „ .. . The secretary (Mrs K. McCarthy) stated that Mrs O’Brien wished to be relieved of the duties of president during the coming year. . Mrs F. M. Dennehy was nominated for the position of president by Miss AndeTson and Mrs Kitchingham, and as no other nominations were received she was declared elected. It was decided to record appreciation of the work of Mrs James O’Brien during her term as president. Votes of thanks were also passed to the treasurer, auditor, secretary, and the newspapers. , , Mrs T. King reported that the Runanga sub-branch was making good progress, several former members having rejoined the committee. GREY MAIN SCHOOL COMMITTEE APPRECIATION OF WORK OF TEACHERS At the monthly meeting of .the Grey Main School Committee, a letter was read from the Canterbury Education Board stating that the inspector’s report, had been most favourably commented on by the board, which desired to convey to the headmaster and staff warm appreciation of their good work. „ The secretary, Mr C. F. Shapcott, said that the letter was a special one, and the committee should congratulate Mr J. Graham (headmaster) and the staff on the high standard attained gt the school. A motion was carried to'this effect.

The Canterbury Education Board also wrote in reply to the committee’s letter about frequent staff changes, stating that the board was not responsible for the changes which were-beyond its control. The secretary reported having discussed the matter fully with the secretary of the board. He felt that in future there would be less cause for complaint.

Messrs R. Clark and J. W. Greenslade were appointed a visiting committee for the month.

The chairman, Mr G. Batty, referred to the renovations of the interior of the school, stating that the job reflected much credit on the foreman. It was decided to send a letter to the Canterbury Education Board, expressing appreciation of the foreman’s efforts.

It was "decided to thank the reserves superintendent. Mr R. Cooper, for his assistance in planting shrubs received by the sphool from the Canterbury Education Board.

AMATEUR ATHLETIC CLUB ANNUAL MEETING AT GREYMOUTH At the annual meeting of the Greymouth Amateur Athletic Club, presentations were made to Messrs. M. Kennedy, W. Mann, and Jones, in acknowledgement of their assistance on the social committee. , _ The financial statement showed a credit of £9O 11s'lid, the social committee being largely responsible for the healthy state of the finances. The president, Mr T. P. Ryan, said the last season had been a' most successful one, in jspite of the inclement weather,' teams' having been sent to Blenheim, Ikamatua, Runanga, Hokitika, and Canterbury championships. Competition had been keen, and competitors had had an excellent season. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr -A. A. Adams; president, Mr T. P. Ryan (re-elected); vice-presidents. Mrs M. Kennedy, Miss M. Ray, Messrs A. Grogan, J. B. Bluett, J. Stokes, J. McGirr, A. Fraser, H. S. F. Silcock,. W. M. Stewart, and Bro. Oswald; club captain, M t S. McDonnell (re-elected); secretary, Mr E. B.’ E. Taylor (re-elected); treasurer, Mr I. Steel (re-elected); committee, Misses M. Kennedy, J. , Furness, Messrs L. Wilson, B. Patterson, T. Marker,' W. McKechnie, and W. Mann. Twenty-two . new members were elected, all of whom promise to be active competitors. TROTTING CLUB AT WESTPORT

GOOD POSITION REPORTED An intimation that the club would carry on its activities as usual in spite of the war was given by Mr H. Lovell (chairman), at the annual meeting of the Westport Trotting Club on Thursday night. Reviewing the annual report. he expressed pleasure at the 'healthy state of the club’s finances, a good profit having resulted from the annual race meeting. He expressed alarm, however, at the Government’s decision to abolish the 1 per cent, rebate on totalisator revenue. He said that this would mean a difference between success and failure for some clubs. ! Mr E. McDonald suggested that if the petrol restrictions were still in vogue, an improved train service should be arranged for the Christmas meeting. Mr R. O’Neill moved a recommendation to the incoming committee that a new starter be appointed. He said that visiting trainers and drivers complained of the starting at the last race meeting held. Members said that no official complaints had been made. It was moved, as a recommendation to the new committee, that no training fees be charged this year, but that permits should still be received to train horses on the club’s course. When Mr R. Thompson asked that some music be provided on race days, Messrs C. F. Schadick and W. Crad-. dock mentioned the possibility of using a radio broadcast set. This they said would keep many people on the course who left to hear the Auckland Cup and other races described. The matter was referred to the committee. PERSONAL NOTES GREYMOUTH Mr C. O’Connor has arrived from Rakaia on a visit. Mr. and Mrs C. Adamson have returned from Christchurch. Mr H. C. Langford, business agent, Railways Department, was a visitor to Grcymouth yesterday. Mr C. J. Walsh has retufned from Christchurch. . Mr D. McLaughlin, Nelson, is visiting relatives at Cobden. Mr J. Olson has returned from Wellington. , ~ . Miss Zita Munson, daughter of Mr and Mrs'H. Munson, Greymouth, was successful in the State dental nurses examination last week. Miss Munson has been appointed to the Motueka School Dental Clinic. WESTPORT Mr G. Mason left on Thursday for Wellington to play in the All Black trial matches. ‘ , _ _ Messrs H. W. Baker and E. James (Karamea) visited Westport on ThursdaMr and Mrs H. Lowther (Newton Flat) have taken up residence at WestP °Captain B. J. Mathewson, Lieutenant S L Wood, and Second-Lieutenant D. J.’ Fountaine will leave for Burnham next week, where they will be attached to the Rifle Battalion of the Southern District Military Force. POWER SUPPLY IN HOKITIKA ANNUAL MEETING OF , COUNCIL The Hokitika Borough Council will hold a special meeting on Monday to consider proposals for the reduction of electric light charges in the town. For many years the Kanieri Electric Company has held the licence to sell power in the township, and the present rate is 8d a unit for light and 1 l-3d a unit for heat. The residents of Hokitika have been seeking a reduction in charges, and the general manager for the company, Mr W. J. Radford, on his recent trip to the United States, discussed the position with directors, of the power company, which uses the power mostly for dredging. . ' At a previous meeting the council decided that unless the price came down to the level of the Greymouth power charge—6d a unit for light—the contract be not renewed. . The meeting on Monday is arousing much interest. * APPEAL FOR WOMEN’S REST ROOM At a meeting of the Greymouth branch of the Plunket Society, it was decided that the appeal for the Centennial Memorial at Greymouth, which is to .take the form of a women’s rest room and Plunket rooms, should be proceeded with immediately. The Mayor, Mr F. A. Kitchingham, said it was hoped to raise a considerable sum by direct donations from the business people of Greymouth, while assurances of full support had been received from the women’s institutes in all parts of the district, many of which had already done splendid work. SHIPPING PORT OF GREYMOUTH GREYMOUTH, September 22. The Kakapo will sail, when bar conditions are more favourable, for Wellington. The Klwitea is loading for Auckland. The Rata will sail this evening with coal for Nelson and Picton. The Huanui will sail this evening with coal for Foxton. The Purlri will sail this evening with timber for Onehunga and Port Waikato. The Korowai is loading for Miramar and Wellington. The Gabriella is due to-morrow to load timber for Miramar and Wellington. The Gael is due to-morrow from Wellington with cargo. PORT OF WESTPORT WESTPORT, September 22. The Titokl Is- due to-day from Nelson. The Te Aroha is due to-morrow from Wellington, and Will sail for Little Wanganui. The Karetu arrived from Wellington yesterday, and will sail for that port tomorrow. . _ The Totara left for New Plymouth today. The Poolta, for Lyttelton, arid the Kaimiro, for Auckland, left yesterday. The Karitane and Kartigi are due to sail to-day for Napier and Auckland respectively. PIANOFORTE RECITAL IN WESTPORT A very interesting and'much appreciated pianoforte recital was given at the Westport Technical High School on Thursday by Mr Paul Schramm. A welcome was extended by the principal (Mr J. Metson) to the pianist, who played several items, classical and modern.
