TUBE GOSSIP

Reminders Acceptances for the Greymouth Jockey Club’s spring meeting will close at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Curbing the Amateurs It is the ambition of many English amateurs to have a mount in the Livererpool Grand National, and on occasions horses have been bought so that their owners should figure in that race. These inexperienced riders constitute a danger, and it is proposed to take a step that will make things safer for the regular jumping jockeys. A London newspaper says the idea is, in future, to bar any rider (amateur or professional) who has not ridden five steeplechase winners in any country. Point-to-point and hunt races will not count as qualifying winners. Aintree is. difficult enough without the presence of riders who scarcely know which way they or their mounts are going. Yet to Appear

There have been inquiries as to what became of the Heroic—Trasina colt, General Wolfe, who reached 2300gns before being knocked down at the 1938 yearling sales, writes "Pilot.” His owners. Messrs H. S. Thompson and P. C. Basche, gave him to J. Scobie to train, but he was not raced last season. Now he is to be given another trial, but this time at Randwick, with F, McGrath as his trainer. His appearance is reported to be in keeping with the promise he gave as a yearling, when he was one of the finest-looking youngsters offered at auction.

Another Expensive Failure The four-year-old Colonel Payne, who cost Miss D.' Paget 15,000gns, as a yearling, was made an bdds-on favourite for a race at the Ascot meeting. He ran . nowhere, and subsequently shaped so badly in a couple of other races that English funters are wondering how he gained a Veputation as a galloper. His latest start was in a mile race at Newmarket last month. Carrying only 7-12, against the 8-13 of the wmner, Puzzler, he finished such a bad last in a field of five that the newspaper critics are now satisfied he has neither pace nor staying ability. G. Richards was on Colonel Payne in his Newmarket race, but could not do any better with ihim than- his previous riders. A Lean Year

In the absence of Ajax and with Speat Chief under a cloud, owing to leg trouble, it looks as if the weight-for-age races at the Randwick spring carnival will be robbed of a lot of interest. At present Defaulter should

not experience any difficulty in scooping the pool, says a Sydney writer. It is unfortunate that an interruption in Spear Chief’s programme should come at a time when he was regarded as almost certain to make matters interesting in the long weight-for-age races. Australian Handicaps ' - The position of the markets on the forthcoming big handicap events in Australia when last week’s mail left for New Zealand, was as follows; EPSOM HANDICAP. Te Hero. Death of Racing Official The sudden death on Tuesday of Mr George Gaudin, Lower Hutt, removes a familiar figure from Trentham on race days. For more than 40 years Mr Gaudin’had been a servant of the Wellington Racing Club, and was in charge of the weighing room staff. He Was well and favourably known to all visiting oWners, trainers, and jockeys, who will receive news of his death with great regret. Mr Gaudin was also employed by the Wairarapa, Masterton, Levin, and Otaki clubs at race meetings, and by the Wellington Trotting Club. He was for some years assistant secretary to the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society. His wife predeceased him 18 months ago, and he is survived by a family of six, three married sons, and one unmarried, and two married daughters. Wellington R.C.
