SPECIAL APPEAL BY POPE
NOTES TO LEADING POWERS (Received September 1, 7 p.m.) ROME, August 31. The Pope to-day sent a special urgent appeal to the leading Powers of Europe, pleading with their Governments to mak3 the most strenuous efforts to avoid war. The Pope has ordered all Roman Catholics throughout the world to pray for peace; A prelate stated that the Notes to the diplomats were identical and contained a new and more pressing insistence on the solution of the situation without war.
Vatican sources believe the crisis . cannot endure - beyond Sunday.
