BLOCKADE AT TIENTSIN
“ ONLY A MILITARY NECESSITY ” STATEMENT BY GENERAL ABE (Received September 1, 7 p.m.) TOKYO, August 31. The Japanese Prime Minister (General Abe) . issued a statement that the isolation of Tientsin . was only a, military necessity and would be lifted if Britain abandoned its support of Marshal Chiang Kaishek. Although the British and Japanese conversations have reached a deadlock, Japan is ready to respond to a conciliatory attitude. THE FOUR CHINESE AT TIENTSIN AMBASSADOR PROTESTS AT SURRENDER LONDON, August 31. The Chinese Ambassador (Mr Quo Tai-chi) protested to the Foreign Office that it was manifestly unfair to hand over the four Tientsin Chinese accused of the murder of Mr Wang to the Japanese as' it would prejudice their case, which is pending.
The solicitors in London who are acting for the Chinese prisoners have lodged in Shanghai an application for a stay of the order to hand the Chinese over. They said it was unbelievable that the British Government should .surrender the men while the matter was sub judice.
