BIRD SONGS
(BFXCIAIXT WaiTTKS FOB TBS PBSSS.) [By WHIM-WHAM.] The Wax-eye on the Windowsill Put up a knowing Head. ' “The Crumbs are good this Morning, Thank you, Sir,” he said. “But Families in Germany Are rationing their Bread.” The Ducks were all in Conference Along the River’s Side, “Thank God for open Earth and Sky And growing Grass,” they cried. “But over on the Continent The Frontiers divide.” Like white aimless Aeroplanes The Gulls flew overland Crying, “The Mist is off the Coast, The Sun 'is on the Sand; But l 'Ships are moving secretly And Batteries are manned.”
From Sparrow, Thrush, and Starling, Throughout the Day I heard No Twitter of Encouragement, No single, cheering Word;' I wish I were an Ostrich, j ij' That optimistic Bird! ~
