CONCILIATION COUNCIL
BRICK AND TILE WORKERS* DISPUTE No settlement was reached in most sections of the Canterbury, Nelson, West Coast, and Marlborough- Brick, Tile, and Pottery workers’ dispute heard in Conciliation Council yesterday. The Conciliation Commissioner (Mr S. Ritchie) presided, Messrs A. Duncan, A. Hutson,-T. W. ■ Woodroffe, .F. W. Brightling. A. C. Taylor, and D. I. Macdonald were the employers’ assessors, and the workers were represented by Messrs P. M. Butler, L. Glover, J. Conaghan, C. Terry, C. M. Auton, Misses M, B. Howard, and M. Poulton.
One of the only, sections agreed to. was the clause prohibiting piece-work. The rates of wages for adults and youths were not fixed, and no agreement was reached about hours of work and annual leave.
The employees submitted the following for hourly wage rates:— Flangers and moulders, 2s 9d; stickers, 2s 7Jd; setters and drawers, 2s 6id; quarrymen -using explosives, 2s 6id; burners, 2s ssd; clay pitmen, 2s 5Jd; all other workers, 2s sd. The weekly wages claimed for workers under the age of 21 ranged from £1 5s to £4. As a counter claim, the employers submitted the rates in the existing Canterbury award, with the exception of the weekly scale for youths which ranged from £1 5s to £3 17s 6d.
