TURF GOSSIP

Nominations for • the New Zealand. Cup, to be run on November 4, will close at 5 pjn. on Friday. A Serious Loss The discontinuance of the 1 per cent, rebate on totalisator turnover to racing clubs will represent, a sum of about £SOOO on last year's figures of the Canterbury Jockey Club, and of more than £350 to the Banks Peninsula Club. An’ idea can be gained from these figures of how the change will affect the smaller racing clubs in the South Island.

Racing at Omoto The Greymouth Jockey Club has attracted a fairly large nomination from Riccarton stables, .the list including Kilrobe. Aggravate. Jan Ridd, Skyrena, Lady Mlddleham. Studley Royal. Gay Rebel, Great Memory, St. Cloud, Comus, Chief Lama. Ohmaha, Sunny Dawn, Sir Gladsome, Philibun, Courtyard, Pol Roger. Contract, Emmeline Girl, Metal Bird. Roy Bun, Lady Don, Land Raid, and Knight Commander. Back to EUerslle

Mrs M. Steinberg. of Auckland, has decided to have all of her horses trained at Elierslie. and the Riccarton trainer, ’C. C. McCarthy, who has had Fidelis. Konneta, Wapaugn, and Soap Box in', his stable for some weeks, has received instructions, to ship them north, by a direct steamer from Lyt r teiton to Auckland leaving next week. Of the quartet, the most likely'winner during ? the - season - is the Bulan dshar filly: Konneta. who has not been hurried by McCarthy, and will not require much more racing to get her back to her good, form oT last season. Owner-Trained

Schoolgirl is now being trained at Yaldhurst by her owner. G. H. Humphries. This Paper Money filly gave an encouraging display in her one race at the Grand .National meeting, and is to make her next appearance at Ashburton next month.

A Coart Candidate Peacock is now being.trained at Riccarton by B. H.. Brodie,' and is to ’be taken to .the Greyipoqth. meeting next week. Peacock has always displayed a turn of speed, and the West Coast track should suit him.

A Speedy Fitly The three-year-old/ Counter Lunch, by Iliad from Countersign, was recently brought up to Riccarton by the Wingatuihorseman, R. J. Mackie, who has decided to make Riccarton his headquarters for a - while. Counter Lunch was.purchased by.a patron of W. E. Hancock’s stable in January last at Tfenthani.' and in her last, appearance ;in public ran a.-close'third to La Bru and - Silver Stick in a two-year-old handicap at Trentham on January

At Wihgatal , Riccarton stables will -be represented at th'a'Otago. Hunt Club’s meeting on Saturday . by-Ddhadea, ’Pink’ Dress, St. Cloud; Lord Midas, and Flame Riding, engagements have been made’as follows:—A.-. Stokes. St/ •; Cloud;, R/ Mackie. Flame . Training at Wingatui has been hampered by bad weather, and horses that raced at: the Grand National meeting will hold an advantage if started at the Otago : Hunt meeting;

Proved Stayers vWt' In the Ascot Stakes this' year there were. 30 runners, although the race is run over two miles and a half. It would not appear that there is any dearth of stayers in England. Among the proved stayers engaged were the French horse, Contrevent. Snake Lightning, Wlnnebar, . and Foschase. Once again horses of the Sonrln-Law tribe bad the finish to themselves.-.The winner was Frawn, who, also won last season. Prawn is a flve-year-oltj horse ny Foxlaw out of Fire Mist, by Sun- , star out of Lorgnette, by Isinglass out of Galinne, by Galopin.- JFrawn is a three-quarter brother to the New Zealand horse, Siegffjed, sire of the bourne i Cup winner, 1 Wotan, 1 Essex (Great Northern Derby), Brunhild (Oaks), Wagner, and other winners. TROTTING NOTES

Reminders Nominations for tiie 1941 New Zealand Derby will close with the secretary of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club on Friday, at which time the second payment of £3 for this year’s Derby will also fall due. New Brighton Trotting Club While the nominations for the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting were restricted, the acceptances show good average-sized fields in every race. In the Seaview Handicap there are eight acceptances, and in the principay event there will be 10 starters, including the bracketed horses Donald Dhu and Cantata. Yet both these races might present rare problems for speculators, for a reasonably-sized field gives every horse a chance, and the race is run on its merits. In the early betting there has been a decided move for Cantata and Colonel Grattan, two horses that are rapidly approaching cup class, while one of the less fancied candidates is Reporter, a brilliant sprinter, who has won over two miles .and is in the hands of a fine trainer and competent reinsman, T. H. McGirr. It is more than 12 months since Reporter won a race, and his success was then attained in the August Handicap at Addington, when the minor places were filled by Blair Athol and Cantata. Recent racing has improved Reporter, who may have to be considered at New Brighton. _ This race will not be easily won, for it will produce one of the most evenly-bal-anced fields seen out for some time. Great Divide Great Divide’s running at the August meeting at Addington suggested that be was a champion in the making, but possibly he had an advantage in that he was better conditioned than the majority.' He is now' in select company in the Wainoni Handicap on Saturday, and while he appears to be a horse that would be well suited by yielding going, he will find stern opposition. This race might help to prove whether Great Divide is as good a, .horse as some of his admirers claim him to be. ' , „ • Training at New Brighton The outside of the course proper at New Brighton was open for fast/Work yesterday morning, and the opportunity of a run oh a grass track was not lost sight of by trainers. It was only to be expected that the course would be heavy, but part of it was in surprisingly good order, and with fine weather in the interval conditions should be good for Saturday’s meeting. A big number of visiting horses paraded, and while the times were hot fast, useful work was done,' XJnboppled Trotters A. Butterfield was a visitor with Guy Hugo and Violet Wrack,’ and both were worked over a mile and a half, Guy Hugo has. always shown a liking for the big grass track at New Brighton, and in his last -four, starts there he has won .three times. . He did not give an outstanding display yesterday, but he bears a bright appearance, and is apparently ' ready for immediate engagements,-. iVolet Wrack, who; does not claim-, an engagement this -week, was formerly -trained by W.. J. Doyle, and Is only a recent addition to the Addington team. ' Sagamore .'was another trotter driven -by Butterfield, and he gave a pleasing display. This gelding-has a lot of speed, and Is already one of the early fancies for' the Improvers’ Handicap, in which he is set .to . give away 36 yards. G.Cameron'sTeam

' The: New Brighton trainer, G, Cameron, has a fair-sized team in- work, including the two trotters Reward and Writer. The former gave a solid display of trotting at Addington when he finished second to Gentleman Joe, and the handicap of 60 yards in the Improvers’ Handicap on Saturday is not considered beyond him. Writer will be making his first appearance after a long spell from the trace track, during which he has been given a lot of road work. He looks well enough, but, now 15 years old,, he can hardly be expected. to improve on his previous best,

From Addington -No horses. look better than J-. Pringle’s : team, and at New Brighton yesterday. Windsor Lass and Loyal Pat'wer# given a trial run. without any attempt at record breaking. Windsor Lass is' in great order, and following on her good win at Addington she may" still further improve her record this week. Loyal Pat did not race as well as expected at the August meeting, but he is'expected to do better in the immediate future. .

Aristotle Aristotle, in R. Motz’s care, is looking as well as ever, and though he is not the ideal trotter he must always ,pe considered. He has as much speed as most trotters racing, and has only to do his work correctly.to win a race. The track at New Brighton on Saturday, while not being especially fast, will provide going that will suit Aristotle. ~ ... __ ... .- A Useful Sprint** ! Stylish Boy is an acceptor for the Belfast; Handicap at.New Brighton on Saturday; and while he is possibly>not a stayer, the nine and a half furlongs Will be the ideal-distance he can be asked 3to race over.' This well-bred gelding; by Grattan Loyal—Highstepper,, may yet develop into a crack sprinter. ■ F- ■■*■■■ ■. " ■ " ■ . ■! ‘ ■ * 1 ” 1 : " ’* - —————
