CARS FOR COUNTRY CONSTABLES

: A '''. —♦ , ; SUGGESTION MADE TO Government fFrorn Our Parliamentary Reporter.! 'L : WELLINGTON, August 29. The suggestion that- the Government should supply motor-cars to- police officers in' country districts was made by Mr A. H. Nordmeyer (Government, Oamaru) when the . Police Department estimates were being considered in the House of Representatives to-day. The proposal ’was endorsed by Mr W. J. Poison (Opposition, Stratford). Mr Nordmeyer said that if country police officers had motor-cars available they could co-operate more readily with Transport Department officers. On busy days they could, perhaps, take a regular highway beat, and allow the transport officer to go 'elsewhere in th® district. ' Mr Poison said there was insufficient transport available for country policemen. He said that during the last election campaign he had been asked to give a lift to the officer assigned for duty, at a country meeting, and had done so, but had been accused of requiring police protection.... The Minister in charge of the department (the Hon. P. Fraser): They had no right to ask you. Mr Fraser added that transport was available for officers, and that they had no need to seek • lifts from private individuals. , ,
