LEGACIES FOR SCHOOL

WELLINGTON COLLEGE TO BENEFIT 1 BEQUESTS BY WIDOW OP FORMER HEADMASTER (press association telegram.) WELLINGTON, August, 29. Advice that under the will of the late Mrs J. P. Firth, widow of a. former headmaster of Wellington College,’ several legacies and bequests had been made to Wellington College, was received at to-day’s meeting of the Wellington College’s board. The sum of £IOOO is bequeathed for • investment, the income to be used for the upkeep and beautification of the Memorial Hall at the college. After satisfying certain other legacies the ultimate residue of the estate is bequeathed to the governors of Wellington College in trust to establish- a scholarship at the college to be known as the Joseph P. Firth Scholarship. In addition, the following pictures are given to the college;— Oil painting, “Avon.” by Madden; oil painting, “Tess,” by Nairn; oil, painting, “Campanile," given by Mrs Adams to Mr Firth in memory. of her son, Sefton, and to be hung near the Memorial Hall or in it; two presentation photographs given to Mr Firth on his retirement.

, An offer was also made for placing in the college museum Mr Firth’s C.M.G. decoration with miniature, and also a gold presentation key of Firth House.

Mr W. A. Armour, headmaster of the college, wrote stating that Mrs M. Mitford (Wellington), mother of Dr. Bertram Mitford, dux of the college in 1918, whose death occurred at Wairoain May., desired to hand over to the board £IOO to found‘an annual prize in science for sixth form pupils as a memorial to her son. Mrs Mitford desired that a debenture be bought and that the interest be devoted to the annual prize. The prize is to be called the, Bertram Mitford Memorial Prize, an award of suitable books to be made to the most deserving sixth form pupil for proficiency in three out of four sciences taught in the college.
