CANTERBURY TEAM
MATCH AGAINST SOUTHLAND ON SATURDAY
Southland, holder of the Ranfurly Shield, the symbol of provincial Rugby supremacy in New Zealand, will play Canterbury at Lancaster Park on Saturday. For this match the Canterbury selector (Mr V. Craw) has named the following players to practise;— Backs —G. T. Nolan, R. L. Roberts, J. S. Cartwright, A. G. Hunter, J. Ballantyns, B. Mahoney, W. Burgess, F. Allen, A. L. Ellis, J. J. McAuliffe. HIGH STANDARD IN SOUTH AFRICA
(press association telegram.) AUCKLAND. August 28. The opinion that the All Blacks next season, when they toured South Africa, would find the standard of play exceptionally good, was expressed by Lord de Villlers, who was a passenger by the MaunganlL,ord de Vllliers added that South Afrlcan people were looking forward to tne New Zealanders’ visit. When he left, the Rugby season had just started, with evidence of remarkable keenness. Lord de Villiers, who is 28 years of age, succeeded to the title in 1934. He was educated at Oxford University and is a large land-owner in South Africa. He expects to make a short stay in New Zealand.
RUGBY REFEREES MEETING OF ASSOCIATION Last evening there was an attendance o£ about 50 members at the fortnightly general meeting of the Canterbury Rugby Football Referees' Association. The president, Mr H. J. G. Collms. was in the C *The president reported that the results of the examination, which had been held at the previous meeting, were distinctly good, the winners being as follows;—A grade, Messrs A. K. Woodham and D. F. Johnson (equal): B grade, Mr F.R. Wilson: C grade. Mr F. R. Falvey. The president said that it was interesting to note that the highest marks of the competition (all grades) were secured by Mr FalV T ruling was received from the New Zealand Referees’ Association. It dealt with the situation when a team was packing a 3-4-1 scrum and the ball had been hooked until it was clear of the second row, hut not clear of the back man. It was stated that, in these circumstances, the back man had the right to detach himself from the scrummage and then to play the ball with his hand or foot, his action in detaching himself from the scrum rendering the ball “out” of ■ the scrummage. _ , . , The Ashburton Rugby Referees' Association wrote inviting the Canterbury Association to visit Ashburton during September for its annual Rugby match with the local association. It was decided to suggest that the game should be played on September 16. It was also decided that the annual Association football match with the' Association football referees shofild be played at English Park on September 23.
