SEVEN-A-SIDB TOURNAMENT
TESTIMONIAL TO LATIjJ MR CECIL DAVEY
Although the North Otago Rugby Union’s seven-a-slde tournament at the Show Grounds op' Saturday afternoon was played in unpleasant weather, before only a small number of spectators, the early sale of tickets made the fixture an excellent financial success. The tournament was arranged by the union to raise funds to make suitable recognition of the serr vices' to Rugby in North Otago of Mr .Cecil Davey, a representative footballer for many years, who, died a few weeks ago from Injuries received in a club match. Although no completed details were available on Saturday, it is estimated that more than £6O was. raised for the fund.
. Most of the matches were played In drizzling' rain with a bitterly cold northeasterly wind. The grade for non-players attracted most Interest, and after some good games was won by the referees team. Athletic teams won all the other grades except junior which was won by Old Boys after two extra spells had been played. Because of the weather, many of the lower grade matches were defaulted. Certificates will be presented to the winning teams. Selections were played by the Oamaru Garrison Municipal and the North Otago Highland Pipe Bands during the afternoon. The matches resulted as- follows: Non-Players— First round: Craig and Company beat Woollen Mills B by default: Woollen Mills A 4. Second round: Maude Bros., Ltd., 3, Craig-and Company 0; Post and Telegraph Department 5, Woollen Mills A 3; Butchers 8., Bandicoots 3; Referees 3, J. and J. Meek, Ltd., 0. Semifinals: Referees 6, Butchers 3; Post and Telegraph 3. Maude Bros. 0. Final; Referees 3, Post and Telegraph 0. Senior —First round: Athletic A beat Maheno'by default; Athletic B 10, Excelsior B 0. Second round; Athletic A 5, Excelsior A 0; Old Boys 6, Athletic B 0. Final; Athletic A 5, Old Boys 0. Juniors—First round: Athletic B beat Excelsior A; Old Boys Beat Excelsior B by default: Waltaki beat Maheno by default. Second round: Old Boys beat Athletic B by default; Athletic A 6, Waltaki 3. Final; Old Boys 6, Athletic A3. Third Grade—First round; Old Boys 3, Glencoe A 0; Excelsior A beat Athletic B by default: Waltaki beat Excelsior B by default; Athletic A 5, Glencoe B 0. PORT OF OAMARU OAMARU, August 27. The Karu . will load on Tuesday, August 29. for Wellington, Nelson, and New Plymouth, via ports.
The Wainui Is due on Wednesday, August 30, to load for Wellington, Gisborne, and Napier, via ports. ~ „ j The Waiplata will leave Auckland on Friday. September •1, for southern ports, including* Oamaru. She is due here on Saturday, September 9. The Poolta. with coal from Westport, was scheduled to leave that port .on Thursday for Bluff. Dunedin, Lyttelton, Timaru. and Oamaru.
