BEER AND BUTTER
' TO THE EDITOR OF_ THE PBESS Sir, —Together with your correspondent in to-day’s issue on “beer • and butter,” I wish to congratulate you on your leading article on this question. Instead of making such a hue and cry . over the price of beer, which is defi- ’ nitely a luxury, why do not the male ; population order a ban to be placed ■ on the purchase of high-priced food commodities, such as meat, butter, and -• potatoes, which are practically our - main items of' food? The prices of these particular articles are allowed to soar as high as the sky. I believe there is a Price Investiga-
tion Tribunal, but this apparently only - interests itself in tinned salmon and
v sardines. People with families simply 'I cannot afford to buy much, meat at the present high prices. lam ashamea * of the men making such an exhibition ■ of themselves over the price of beer when more important things should demand their attention.—Yours, etc., • MODERATE. August 22, 1939.
TO THE OP THE PRESS. Sir, —Yotir leading article on “Beer - and Butter" is very much to the point. Apparently anyone, wholesaler and re- , tailer, has the right to raise his price - first and argue the point with the price ; . tribunal after. What is wanted from the Government is an Order-in-Council fixing all prices at their pres- , ent level for a period of 12 months. - ‘Then any dissatisfied party should be. able to bring facts.and. figures proving the need of a change. It is regrettable * that the Ministry which has charge of the consumers’ welfare is apparently - not effective.—Yours, etc., KAYE HOE. : : August 21, 1939.
